Album Notes Personnel: Doug Kershaw (vocals, fiddle); Hank Williams, Jr., Fats Domino, Rusty Kershaw (vocals). Doug Kershaw was one of the first Cajun artists to "crossover" to a non-Cajun audience. Kershaw does not play "pure" Cajun music, but combines country, rock & roll and funk with the earthy fiddle and accordion-driven Cajun folk and dance music he grew up with in Louisiana. He has a voice as big as the bayou, and deep and hearty, and he plays the fiddle like a lead instrument. This budget-priced album collects his duets with his brother Rusty from early in his career, and more recent duets with country star Hank Williams Jr. ("Cajun Baby") and New Orleans rock & roller Fats Domino ("Don't Mess With My Toot-Toot'). Kershaw's funkier side is evident on "Cajun Boogie Queen," with its loping, Little Feat/Meters-style groove. If you're a "purist," check out recordings by the Balfa Brothers and Nathan Abshire; if you're looking to get familiar with Cajun sounds of just want a chase-the-blues-away good time, CAJUN GREATS will fill the bill nicely.
