Album Notes John Cage derived the music for 'Atlas Eclipticalis' by placing staff paper over maps of the heavens and tracing the stars to obtain different notes. It is stark and meditative music, barely distinguishable from totally random sound, which accommodates the philosophical position Cage wished to project: the investigation of the interrelation between composition and nature, ego and void. Though 'Winter Music' is flexibly set for as many as 20 pianists, this version features David Tudor alone. Cage might scoff at the idea of a specific performer offering an authoritative interpretation of his music, but the fact remains that David Tudor specialized in Cage's music, and was his longest and closest collaborator. Petr Kotik's decision to conduct '103' (so-named for its 103 instruments) is astounding from the perspective of live performance, just as the idea of a recording in itself contraindicates the multifarious nature of music using chance procedures for both composition and performance. As a snapshot of one of infinite possible pieces that could arise from Cage's one score, this recording is as valid, and the version is as random, as any other.
