Southern California is well-represented on BYE BYE, LOVE, and so a mellow mood prevails. Tightly interwoven harmonies are the centerpiece of this sentimental collection, which includes cuts from albums by Linda Ronstadt, Mary-Chapin Carpenter, Crosby, Stills & Nash and others, along with four new recordings. Jackson Browne and the Eagles' Timothy B. Schmidt could pass for siblings on their opening "Let It Be Me," an inspiring interpretation on which both artists shine. The Beatles' "I Will" gets a breezy bossa nova reading from Ben Taylor--son of James Taylor and Carly Simon--who (surprise!) sounds nothing like his famous father. The Everly Brothers are included with their sorrowful ballad of regret, "So Sad," but, strangely, not their definitive version of the title track, which is interpreted admirably by the Proclaimers. But the real reason to get this album is the Beach Boys' "Don't Worry Baby," performed by the Beach Boys and the Everly Brothers. The melded genius of Brian Wilson's music and two of the world's best harmony groups is perfection.
