The Butter Battle Book by Dr. Seuss (1984, Hardcover)

I love how Theo. always put more into these books than meets the eye. It truly is a parody on the nuclear arms race, which was and still is such a relevant topic. It playfully points out how obscenely absurd this game nations are or have played is--just as absurd as fighting over butter up or down on your bread. As my first grade students, who have no idea of the parody or concept of the nuclear arms race, pointed out, "why fight? What does it matter? Just enjoy the bread!" This book makes it clear, event to young readers, living in fear based on simple choices, is no way to live.

This book is great. I grew up with my parents reading me Dr. Seuss, this one is one of my favorites and haven't been able to find it in stores. I'm looking forward to sharing it with my grandson.

Great Dr. Suess book. This was my daughter's favorite book when she was small...I bought this copy for her son. General summary of the book is two groups argue over whether bread is better butter side up or butter side down.

Great book. Suess used this book to describe the foolishness and fear that produced the Cold War. Kids don't notice that part though. It's typical sillyness and made up words that Suess is loved for.
