Nominated for 7 & winning 4 Oscars in 1970, the exploits of 2 western gangsters are based loosely upon historical figures that too little is known about to be factual.
Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman) is the outlaw with the grandious ideas; The Sundance Kid (Robert Redford) is the outlaw who enjoys putting Butch's schemes into action with the finesse of his skills. Both are leaders of the notorious robbers at gun point, "Hole-in-the-Wall Gang."
With their style of life about to become extinct as civilization is building up in the once wilder West, Butch & Sundance are making the most of their days left on the run in the sun by robbing trains. But, on this particular occasion, Butch's cleverness & Sundance's skills are challenged by a more sophisticated special posse. Seems that they've over-stayed their days of train-robbing. With the posse hot on the heels of their trail, this film becomes a cinematic treasure of gorgeous scenery & cinematography. The aspect of adventure is heightened as Butch & Sundance are hunted from town to town, around mountains & through rivers.
Will they break free of the posse's trail? Or die? Escape? Or be captured? The ending is classic, as is this film; so I'm not telling.
Newman & Redford became 1 of the best well paired set of actors EVER. This film is still ranked in the top 150 ever made & will likely enjoy that rank for a very long time. The closest match made heavenly by Hollywood in a western adventurous comedy that comes to mind is Henry Fonda & Jimmy Stewart in "The Cheyennne Social Club." The woman's version is "Thelma & Louise," with Susan Sarandon & Geena Davis. Four Years later, in 1973, Newman & Redford are smartly paired again for 10 nominated, 7 Oscar winner, "The Sting." It is ranked in the top 100 films of all time~
