Album Notes
The Tornadoes: Gerald Sanders (vocals, bass); Roly Sanders, Jesse Sanders (guitar); George White (saxophone); Leonard Delaney (drums).
Originally released as Josie (4005) in 1964. Includes liner notes by Robert J. Dalley.
No, they're not the Tornadoes of "Telstar" fame, but that group's California counterparts. The U.S. Tornadoes mined the surf-rock vein in the early-'60s, with songs full of twangy, reverb-heavy guitars and almost tribal, tom-laden drum fills. Though they were capable of top-shelf, hard-hitting surf instrumentals ("Bustin' Surfboards," "The Tornado"), the band could also turn out a haunting vocal tune, as witnessed by their Zombies-ish version of "Summertime." While they were contemporaries of the Ventures, the Tornadoes' sound was a bit rawer, with a more sophomoric sense of humor (see the initially scandalous "Shootin' Beavers" and the don't-try-this-at-home instrumental "The Inebriated Surfer").
