Those involved in the titling of this movie should have considered a different name; initially, I'd expected a survey of the entire book. The scripting focused solely on the Sioux Nation and their plight. It has reached down, touched, and gripped my heart as I too am Native American. It is disturbing, to say the least. The degradation of the Sioux Nation as well as other Native American cultures remains constant and continues to be a cause we, as American citizens, must address with much compassion backed up with positive action.

"Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" has proved to be very refreshing in bringing forth truth, factual historical events, and issues to light.

I have enjoyed this movie and highly recommend it to others.

What i liked about this dvd, is it's true to life depiction of what really happened. I'm native American, but didn't get as angry as some of my friends did when they viewed it. On the contrary, i'm native/Caucasion and my compassion for both ethicities runs deep. I bought this DVD to see if my compassion would choose either side, it didn't, but I'm still happy with the purchase.

  Worth Watching

My 14 year old daughter enjoyed this movie as she has been studying this time period in History at school, and she said it helped her to better understand the people associated with the story and the events going on at this time in our country's history. There was a slew of curse words during the first 5 minutes of the movie, completely unnecessary. There are also some elements in the movie that smack of political correctness. While there were some but scenes that were less than savory in this movie, all in all, I think it was an enjoyable film. I'm glad we watched it, but it's not one I would purchase to own and watch repeatedly.

BURY MY HEART AT WOUNDED KNEE
Review created: 11/14/09

An excellent movie about a very tragic time in American history. It is about time that this movie was made! Although the basic facts are there and it shows the horrible decisions forced upon Native Americans by whites, it does not tell some of the horrible facts that occured. Such as infants and toddlers being found with 5 bullets in them. A fact that shows the deep hatred some whites had for the indians. However, if the truth were known, and shown, it would be a very difficult movie to watch.
It is a wonderfully cast movie, and the performances are top notch. I would recommend this movie to anyone!!!!

Provides some awareness of the crimes against Native Americans. Did not care for the way they portrayed Sitting Bull. Too bad they did not get permission to have it filmed on the Reservation so the actual tribe could benefit. At least HBO did something with a Native theme.

Excellent movie on a dark chapter of US history.
Review created: 06/07/09

I've heard about Wounded Knee but never did any research on its historical significance. This is a part of US history and other countries have always viewed US intentions using historical facts as basis for motives. The US have committed and is guilty of cultural genocide on the indigenous people. If the basis for Serbian and Greek mistrust of Muslims are the actions of the Ottoman Empire, other nations use history as the basis for US world wide political activity. And Wounded Knee has not been resolved while Obama is forcing Israel and the Arab countries to resolve their differences. What hypocracy.

  excellent for teaching history
Review created: 04/11/09

Good to get something not totally slanted against natives like all the old movies do. Some educational value. I enjoyed it but it did go against my morals and scruples. How can we do this? Yes, can. It is still a 3rd world county on that reservation

Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee (2007 DVD)
Review created: 12/30/08

I have always wanted this movie. I have watched it many times on HBO and thought this would be a fine movie to add to my collection. It's a story about what had happened after Custer's revolt on the Little Big Horn..is fault or not, things could have been done differently if Custer would have waited for proper orders. The massacre wouldn't have been so bad and the indians wouldn't have to resort to the reservations. Sitting Bull was killed and their wasn't any food to eat for the indians. Wounded Knee is a actual place and there weren't anymore ghost riders.

Bury My Heart At Wounded Knee
Review created: 10/10/08

An accurate account of what happened at Wounded Knee and how a Native doctor and a Caucasian woman fell in love and worked to make life better for the Sioux when promises and treaties were broken.

Saw it when I was near Wounded Knee, SD. Anyone racist should watch it. I could make a huge impact on a person's need to treat each other with equal respect regardless of creed or colour.

The truth told in a touching way, well fitting actors.

I decided to by the DVD after watching "Into the West".
I really liked BMHAWK; it´s telling the story of the continued attemps of the governement to put Indians on reservations and "civilize" them.

It is not the black-and-white kind of story. Neither making the white people >the really bad guys< nor proposing the Natives to be the holy heroes.
It paints a picture that seems realistic to me, bringing up many details. I learned a lot of history through it, for example I could grasp the meaning of Cody´s Wildwest-Show better, and how much the Indians were depending on the rations and supply.

The actors are fitting the roles greatly, some parts of the movie touched me deaply. I would recommand it to anyone :)

If ever there was an indication of the greed which existed and still exists(oil company profits for example) this story is it. Be prepared to be repulsed by the facts involved surrounding the treatment of the American Indian and their well being. I have known of this from previous studies, but this puts in in an observable form.

This was a movie I had wanted to see very much. It was a very, very good movie. I love a good western and the acting and characters were exceptionally well played. There are so many of the western movies that tell a part of our history, and I would recommend this movie for anyone who likes western type movies.

  Great Movie

I read the book in the mid-seventies. The book impressed me so much and as a young white woman, at the time, it was a life altering experience. I have talked of the book throughout the years. The movie version is powerful and complex, but as always had I not read the book, this movie may have been hard to follow. Anyone that has any questions about events that took place during this era, and the arrogant hand the white man had in Indian affairs and atrosities would be inlightened by this movie. I do however, recommend reading the book first.

  Bury My Heart Falls Short
Review created: 03/22/08(updated 09/12/09)

Wounded Knee evokes a great deal of emotion for me, and it was with reluctance that I finally sat down to watch this film. Knowing the details of the massacre, and how women, children and old people were chased down and murdered, was something I wasn't sure I could watch - even in a movie.

One reviewer on Amazon gave this a very thorough review, and he noted that while it was fairly accurate historically, it was not completely so. I won't steal his words for this review. After following the steady downward spiral of the Sioux people into nearly complete destruction over a period of 14 years, the end was, well . . . given cursory attention, a gloss over, Hollywood-ized. According to Black Elk (read Black Elk Speaks for a firsthand account), those "wagon guns" went on firing for a long, long time.

The scenery was well chosen, the sets fairly realistic, and of course, the (Canadian) Native actors who reenacted their American cousins' history were terrific.

What should have been the climax of this endeavor, the Wounded Knee Massacre, was handled pathetically. Such a tragic end to a beautiful way of life deserved far more and better attention than it received. It was the sheer brutality of the soldiers as they shot women and infants at point blank range, their insulting demeanor towards a desperate people, their desire for revenge for Custer's defeat at Little Big Horn, the overwhelming evil that was unleashed that day, that is left out. For that alone, this film falls very, very short of the mark in explaining the grief and mourning, and anger, a people still feel for their lost past. While no fault of the film makers, as a final insult, in the notes at the end of the film, you will see that Congressional Medals of Honor were bestowed upon these "heroes" for their part in this, to use Black Elk's own word, butchery.

Dee Brown's classic book upon which this movie is based is far more detailed. As in most cases, the book is better than the movie. If I could change my rating to no star, I would.

Began reading the book on which this HBO movie is based, but never finished because the book is unbearably sad. The movie is truthful about the way the Indians were treated. The cast is wonderful -- the best Native American actors of our time. Watched the movie on HBO and had to have a copy for my collection.
