Maybe the least characteristic release in the Merge label's history, Breadwinner's BURNER is all violent, herky-jerky time signatures and hollow basslines, rolling percussive chaos and chords stretched out to dire oblivion. It is also the foundation of math rock, the offshoot of hardcore that incorporated virtuoso antics and introduced beloved landmark bands like Botch and Dillinger Escape Plan. What's also fascinating about BURNER as an oft-overlooked template for this sub-genre is its total lack of vocals, illuminating its indirect influence on countless groups who would later bury much of this innovative instrumental nuance with screaming voices.
