If you are a fan of Buffy, then the DVD packs of all of the various full seasons are good. Some may be a bit better than others, but mostly good. For those people who haven nott ever seen Buffy the Vampire Slayer or do not get the show, then it may take a while to work into it. But there have rarely been weekly episodic shows on television that are so inventive and original. The show is quirky, extremely funny, witty, long on action and, of utmost importance, character development and interaction.
Season six was the first season on the UPN network after the show had been dropped by the WB. It takes up where season 5 left off, in which Buffy sacrificed herself to save (yet again) the universe from an apocalyptic ending, and her sister Dawn as well. Season 6 spans the entire gamut. There are funny shows (such as Buffy working a dead-end job at the Doublemeat Palace) and deadly serious shows, where Willow deals with her addiction to magics; in a not very successful manner. It is a stark metaphor about how normal humans can get roped into addictions with drugs, alcohol, and gambling and destroy the people that they love in the process.
The highlight of season 6, however, has to be the seventh episode entitled, Once More, With Feeling. Joss Whedon, the creator, producer, and head writer of Buffy, had long wanted to do a musical. He succeeded by putting one entire musical episode right smack dab in the middle of season 6. By itself, this episode makes season 6 entirely worth the purchase. It is funny, dramatic, and, not too bad in the music department. But what I find amazing about this episode is that it works in context with the show and develops the plot, at the same time the characters are singing and dancing their way to defeating the bad guy. This show would not have been possible in any other sequence within the storyline. The actors and actresses all did their own singing and dancing, with great accomplishment. There are some surprises about how good some of them actually sing, such as Anthony Head as Giles, Emma Caulfield as Ayna, and Amber Benson as Tara. Anya has a great little bit about bunnies that causes great guffaws every time I see it.
Season 6 also had some dark moments, and the affair between Buffy and Spike was sometimes rather unpleasant. Buffys romance with Angel in seasons 1 and 2 was very dream-like and stylized. Her fling with Spike in season 6 is just the opposite; very gritty, sexy, full of heat and passion, and sometimes very disturbing. I find this aspect of season 6 rather uncomfortable, and probably unsuitable for anyone under the age of 15. There is not much that is left unsaid about their relationship.
Season 6 is well worth the purchase, if you are Buffy fan. If you are not a fan yet but just curious, I would start with season 1 instead. Not only would you get in on the ground floor, it is probably cheaper as well. That season only has 12 episodes instead of the 22 that the rest of the seasons have, and thus, less disks to buy.
