Album Notes Dire Straits: Mark Knopfler (vocals, guitar); Hal Lindes (guitar); Guy Fletcher, Alan Clark (keyboards); John Illsley (bass); Terry Williams (drums). Additional personnel: Sting (vocals). Recorded at Air Studios, Monserrat, West Indies. All tracks have been digitally remastered. BROTHERS IN ARMS found Dire Straits at the peak of a long climb in the music industry. After an auspicious debut with DIRE STRAITS, they stuggled on through personnel changes and shifting musical tastes. Knopfler's work with Bob Dylan (SLOW TRAIN COMING and some touring) and the band's appearance at Live Aid helped to keep their recognition high. This album proved to be the payoff, as "Money For Nothing" hit number 1, and the second single, "Walk Of Life" also made the top-10. Report this review Review created: 06/25/08 by: Dire Straits' fifth studio album, released in May 1985, was a massive hit, and became the biggest selling album of that year in the UK and also the biggest seller of all time in the UK. And justifiably so. At first listen this did not sound like an album that was going to reach the heights that it did, but it quickly grows on the listener. It starts gently rather than with a bang with 'So Far Away' and fades away 9 tracks later with a moody wash of keyboards and achy, echoey guitar. Of course the band's big hit single, 'Money For Nothing' which reached no 1 in the US (no 4 in UK) is one of the highlights. Knopfler's ode to MTV was co-written by Sting who also features on vocals on this track. The other big single was 'Walk of Life' which just missed the number 1 spot in the UK. 'So Far Away' and the title track were top 20 hits in the UK, while 'Your Latest Trick' made the UK top 30. The tracks sound at their best in their full-length versions found on the CD, whereas side one of the original vinyl release suffers slighly in comparison as 'So Far Away', 'Money For Nothing', 'Your Latest Trick' and 'Why Worry' are all edited due to time constraints. The themes on the last four tracks on the album (side two of the original vinyl LP) are predominantly soldierly - 'Ride Across the River', 'The Man's Too Strong' and the title track, which closes the album. The title track is arguably one of Dire Straits' strongest moments, and along with 'Money For Nothing' became a favourite live track for the remainder of their career, while other standouts on the album include the beautiful 'Why Worry'. Dire Straits followed this release with an exhilirating world tour, and 'Brothers In Arms' arguably saw the band at their peak. There was a long gap between this and the next album 'On Every Street', which was a rather pale shadow in comparison as was the tour that went with it. The band split in 1995 when Mark Knopfler launched his solo career. While the band is gone, the thrill of 'Brothers In Arms' is not. Review ID: 10000000007702240 Was this review helpful? He does know that we must agree on his purchases. Review ID: 10000000003151394 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
