As good as the first of the series. I am hoping for more. I have fallen for Odd Thomas. Good characterizations, humor. Story line less important.

  Odd, a misnomer

"Brother Odd" is the third book in a series of books by Dean Koontz about a young man named Odd Thomas. You are not required to read the first two books ("Odd Thomas" and "Forever Odd") before reading this one, of course, but I believe you'd have a better understanding of the storyline.

Odd Thomas is a young man who has an extraordinary gift: he can see and commune with the spirits of dead people who, for some reason or another, are not ready to move on. Odd is also able to see bodachs, or shadowy malevolent spirits who thrive on violence and evil, and whose appearance signifies an impending tragedy. Odd's "gift" complicates his life quite a bit, and has brought him loss and terrible heartbreak. Needing a respite, Odd has retreated to a monastery in the Sierra Nevadas. Unfortunately, trouble always seems to find him, and during the course of the story, a kindly priest disappears, bodachs arrive, strange kaleidoscope bone creatures make their evil presence known, and even Death himself makes an appearance. Odd's life is even further complicated by another guest at the monastery, an ominous Russian by the name of Rodion Romanovich. Is he friend or foe? Odd must decide, and must once again figure out a way to prevent disastrous events from occurring and annihilating the residents of St. Bart's.

Odd Thomas is not odd. He is intelligent, honest, humble, and pure. His dry, self-deprecating wit, and the back-and-forth banter he engages in with some of the other characters is extremely enjoyable. Interestingly, Odd has also developed a relationship with the spirit of Elvis, the King of Rock 'N Roll himself, which is charming, amusing, and sweet. Although this is no doubt a horror story, there is still room for humor, right up to the very last page. I laughed out loud at the ending, and closed the book with a huge smile on my face.

  ODD THOMAS IS BACK!

The endearing character Odd Thomas is back in great form and just as captivating as he was in "Odd Thomas" the Patterson introductory book for this ghost seeing character. Found this book more true to the character than was portrayed in "Forever Odd. Brother Odd has his hands full with new evil attracting the ever lurking Bodachs as they start to visit the children that live at the Monastery. Looking forward to the next sequel.

Not as good as the first ODD THOMAS book

BROTHER ODD is the third in a series of Dean Koontz novels featuring Odd Thomas, an interesting, witty, and likable character who happens to see ghosts. This third installment is better than the second book, FOREVER ODD, but neither of the sequels are as good as the first ODD THOMAS novel which I consider to one of Koontz's best books (I rate WATCHERS as his best). I recommend ODD THOMAS without reservation, but suggest that you save your money borrow a copy of FOREVER ODD and/or BROTHER ODD from your local library. I also recommend that you read ODD THOMAS prior to reading the other books. Each book stands alone, but reading the best book first will increase your enjoyment of the following two.

The book was a typically good book from Dean Koontz. It did not follow the story line of previous books about the light sensetive man searching military bases in the California desert. It was still entertaining and full of twists and turns that kept the story entertaining.

I decided to buy Brother Odd because I thought that it was a continuation of a previous story line that I had enjoyed.

Loved the book, it is the 3rd in the series of the Odd Thomas books. Once again Koontz provides such detail you can see the people and objects he describes. There is a Koontz twist in this book as I have read in his others. The twists are one thing that continues to grab my interest and keeps me reading his books.

The best thing about buying on Half.com is that you are able to get high quality items at a very decent price. Often it is the only place you can get movies, books and other items that are no longer on the open market. I have bought several books, movies and dvd's and will continue to do so in the future.

  Brother Odd
Review created: 12/09/08

A new & very different journey for Dean's hero, Odd Thomas. With his deft hand, Koontz again brings together mystery, humor, adventure and more evidence that he researches his history & logistics thoroughly, as he mixes the ingredients of his tale. Fans of the earlier Odd stories will be happy to know that Elvis has not abandoned Odd on this challenge. I highly recommend that you join Odd on this [sometimes terrifying] new task that his special gift has forced upon him.
Odd Thomas leaves the desert in this narrative, to help him escape the pain of losing Stormy, and to put distance between him & the calling that his "gift" keeps pulling him into; but there is a new, more evil presence that waits to challenge Odd, and the reader.

Reading Dean is like coming home for Christmas
Review created: 12/05/08

There simply is no author that writes as well as Dean Koontz in my opinion. His choice of words is precise, yet imaginative. The images he creates with his words allow you to see and feel everything Odd Thomas is experiencing even when it involves creatures you will never see in your lifetime. You will thoroughly enjoy worrying with Odd about how fast they are, what their limitations are, and what their motivations are.
Though set in modern day, the conversations between characters have substance and sparkle, unlike most of today's dim-witted repartee. The dialing up of the intelligence level alone, makes you feel you have gone somewhere foreign. I think good fiction should transport you, and this definitely does.
Need a little break? Check in to a monastery that's not your average monastery. You will be a better person for the experience.

  Personal Read
Review created: 07/12/08

I love Dean Koontz. I love Odd Thomas. In fact, I love that Dean Koontz loves Odd Thomas enough to write a third (and I'm guessing, soon a fourth) book about him. So I may be a little biased in saying that BROTHER ODD is one of my favorite books of the year.

Odd has left Pico Mundo to join the nuns and brothers in a monastery. Although he's not taking his vows, he's been enjoying the peace and quiet--and relative safety--that being with these brothers and sisters of Christ has brought. He's also enjoyed the numerous children who live there, those who are physically or mentally handicapped, abandoned by their parents, sometimes even suffering at their hands.

Then, as always seems to be the case with Odd, the bodachs show up, and he knows that something bad has come to the monastery. But does it come from the novices, the brooding Russian, the brother who was once muscle for the Mob, the brother who is also a brilliant scientist, or from someone else entirely?

With his faithful dead sidekick, Elvis, and his faithful friends, and the sometimes strange memory and even stranger "spirit" of Stormy, Odd must work to keep the entire population of his new home safe from whatever danger lurks ever nearer.

This is another winner from Mr. Koontz, and the ending, of course, leaves it open for another book about the wonderful, amazing, flawed, and utterly lovable Odd Thomas.

Well worth picking up, BROTHER ODD will have you reading long into the night.

  Odd story Great Character
Review created: 06/12/08

I will start by stating this series is the first time I have ever read Dean Koontz book's.
I enjoy his writing and really connected with this character. The story in this book was strained and very strange. Not to say that seeing the ghost of Elvis is not strange. I ‘m just saying out of three books this one did not satisfy me like the other two did. I hope Odd Hour will fix this for me. The character growth was perfert and will be hard to top. If the Story was as good as the Character growth this would have been an outstanding book.

  Brother Odd by Dean Koontz
Review created: 06/09/08
by:

Brother Odd follows the life of Odd Thomas, a sort-of psychic, ghost-talker, and spiritual problem-solver. This is the 3rd in the series, and as with the first two, it makes you want to read the next one. Koontz pulls you into Odd's simple life (although complications seem to find him, he is a simple fellow). His complex problems, and his attempts in helping the Dead-but-not-done get to the other side, or at least attempt to solve their problems, compels the reader to keep turning pages (and although Elvis appears to hang out with Odd for his friendship, and to provide a cool laugh and soundtrack, how could the King ever have a real problem?). A great read, that leaves me wanting another helping of Odd Thomas. So start with the first one, and join Odd as he converses with the restlessly dead. And enjoy the Elvis soundtracks, for I believe the soundtrack will change in the 4th one, to a more "Bratty" sound, "Frank-ly" speaking.
