Brother MFC-420CN All-In-One InkJet Printer

Our family has 2 of these already. One at our office, one at the in-laws house & one at my house. I am currently shopping for one for our home. We are very pleased with this machine and you can find the cartridges for $2-4 each on Ebay.
There are 4 ink cartridges (one for each color)and they last a long time. We do a lot of printing.
I HIGHLY recommend this all-in-one!

This printer so far has lived up to his reputation. I have yet to use some of the features but I like the printing speed and the copying ability especially. It would be nice to have a loading area for two paper trays instead of one and the glass long enough for legal size paper but it is still an excellent product.

I have 3 printers, a Dell laser, a canon S750 and now the Brother multi-function 420-cn. I bought it because I needed a machine that could fax and do color prints. I bought a Lexmark and after printing 8 pictures it gave out so I returned it and picked up the Brother mainly because I liked it's looks... Well it is a wonderful machine and does everything very well... It will be my main printer for my home office. I was amazed at the price of the refills on ebay compared to the store... whew what a pleasent furprise to see how cheap they are on ebay. Well I guess I can say I don't think I could be happier with any other all in one machine and it is so affordable...

I have this model and well it is my second one. Lightning took out my first one! The Brother warrenty is excellent and so is the surge protector I have from APC. With the Brother MFC 420CN, I have everything I need in one item! I can print, copy, fax and scan with this one machine . It is compact as well. Space is important when setting up your office area. The best part is it has the lift up top so I can scan any item I want and send it to my computer. Then I can attach it to an email and send it anywhere. The top also has the automatic feed of up to 10 pages. I have actually feed up to 15 pages at one time! Just lay them down and they automatically feed to the printer to make copies or fax your multi page documents.
It prints in color or black and white, your choice! But the most impressive feature is the ink. When you buy a color printer or even a printer that only prints in black, it is what the ink will cost to replace, that is very important. This model 420cn has the large individual containers of ink, black, blue, red and yellow. You can check the level of ink on the computer or the MFC screen. And you can refill the ink cartridges with the inexpensive refill kits, or buy the Brother ink cartridges online or at your local retailer. I do both. I can usually get 6-8 refills per cartridge, I could probably get more. This model does not have the computer chip in the cartridge that keeps you from refilling the cartridge and using it more than once!
Have you ever ran out of ink when printing a document? I have and had to go to town and buy more ink, then come home and refill the ink cartridges. The documents still printed in full! This MFC is like a computer, but better! It does not loose your information when you run out of ink and have to refill or replace the ink cartridges.
I think this multi-function printer is the best one on the market. NO Toner needed! I have had this machine or the other one before lightening hit it, for over two years! I have had no problems that would cause me to not like it! I even print beautiful pictures with this model! I have saved so much money on pictures. I still like the printed ones so you can keep, show and share! Grandchildren pictures are very important as well as the family members that are aging! I can crop, enlarge and even make coloring books from family photos. You can use any program with this printer, when it comes to printing pictures. The Brother Multi-function MFC 420CN comes with a program that gives you options on printing. The options include: fine detail , normal and many other settings so you can print portraits from you digital or scanned items!
In closing, if you purchase this model, you will find as I have . You have the best one on the market! So go and buy this model from Brother, the Multifunction MFC 420CN! You will be able to everything you want with just one machine! You will not regret your purchase! I hope this helps you!

Seller left the ink cartargies in the printer. Ink spilled all over the printer and destroyed the printer

It's very hard to find a nice product like this that is network ready. I've found none in lexmark, and those in HP are more than twice the price. For the money this is a great machine. The quality is quite good, even for photos. It is easy to use, I've only had to reference the manual a time or two. I've had no problems with paper jams, as others have claimed. It's not for very heavy use; more small office or home needs.

I've gone through two of these in the last year because of problems and I'm looking for another one now. The only reason I'm buying another one is because I have about 20 ink cartridges I need to use up. Otherwise I wouldn't be buying another mfc 420cn. They are slim and very handy but I've had nothing but problems with the two I've been through.

I really like this machine! I've worked with many other Brother machines before, so I already knew I trusted the company's quality. This baby does it all! Though I do prefer laser, they are so bloody expensive for an all-in-one, and frugality is a major concern for us right now. The price was VERY right, and the print quality is great. The only thing I didn't get, because it is a used machine, was the driver CD, but I just downloaded the drivers from the web. Bottom line, I've always been pleased with Brother's products. I highly recommend this machine!

The only problem I have with this unit is the paper tray. Only holds about 50 sheets and is built very flimsy.

Functions as a standalone unit or network printer, fax and scanner. The driver allows you to remotely view how much ink is in remaining. The auto-feed for copies and faxes jams easily when feeding more than a few sheets.

For the price, this unit cannot be beat.

The outstanding feature of the MFC-420CN for me is the network interface. This solves some of my home network printer access challenges. The installation is as simple as inserting the install cd and selecting network setup.
The scanner function works very well and the associated software is easy to use. While not advertised as a photo printer, it has a multi media reader built in and does a good job of photo printing. It feels a bit flimsy, but for home office use and condsidering the prevailing price range, it seems hard to beat.

saw it at Staples and checked it out there and then found the same model number on ebay and it was only 1 month old. saved 65.00. Seller was excellent and incled everything. Very happy with purchase.

After doing a little research on All-in-one printers, I decided that the Brother MFC-420CN USB Printer was best for my small home Office needs. Its fairly compact, and its capable of producing some amazing photos up to 8x10 (when high quality glossy paper is used with correct printer settings) Also when it comes to ink, it does use multiple cartridges, however unlike its lexmark counterpart they can be bought online from discount ink retailers at a fraction of store prices. My experience with Brother customer support has been exceptional compared to other manuafacturers.

Great printer lasts long time on ink. Have had no paper jams i am very happy with this unit. Would say if you want a reliable printer to go with the Brother. It will do pictures but you should have photo paper, and has a moveable paper feed tray so you can put in 4X6 " sheets for smaller pics. Set the printer pref. to photofor the best color. The best part is that it has a network built into it. You dont have to plug this into a computer to get it to work. Or have it set in the same room. It also can make copys with out having on the computer. Great unit, Buy one and see.

I bought this printer because it was network ready. The ink lasts a good while. Sleek design takes up little space. price was right for my budget.It copies well and faxes well.

Love: Easily refilled and see-thru cartridges, USB & Ethernet plus standalone print from multiple memory cards. Compact, but does it all including Document Feeder. Easy to setup (Brother has downloads so even used without manuals or CDs is easy to deal with). Perfect individual or small office MFC.

Hate: That Brother (and everybody else) are designing to prevent users from refilling ink cartridges, thereby driving up the per-page cost of ownership. So get these before they are all gone, as they are no longer available. The unit print rate is a little slow.

However: ALL Brother MFC's are better than ANY HP or other brand which uses electronics in the cartridge to PREVENT using refilled cartridges, even while halving the ink quantities while increasing the price per cartridge, like we are MORONS. I'll NEVER own another HP especially, which is a shame, due to their cynical and unnecessary engineering of so many throw-away cartridge types.

Item advertised as On / Off button "fell in", cannot turn on. "Worked fine up to this point". Received and promptly repaired on / off button. However item would not operate. During power on cycle the printer comes up with a notation "unable to init". Research revealed this is a common problem with Brother prints and is not repairable at least not economically. This item was misrepresented in the auction, no doubt about it.

Like the fact it was shipped so fast after paying, didn't like the fact it had been opened prior to purchasing. I thought it was a new product, however it does work and is worth it.

wow i thought that i was getting a printer that worked as they said it did i bought it got it it was all broke you have to be sure it is what it is in the picture not a copy of the item i m happy to say that pay pal is the best even if it says no refunds if you dont get the rifht thing you do get a rufund but even after was bad i still know that they or good people out they just like me that will use ebay again thanks ebay and pal pay

this is the best home printer/copier/fax/scanner on the market! it's quiet relatively fast, self feeds and most importantly, the ink is extremely cheap! i pay less than $2 per cartridge. i accidently tried to fax a paper that had white out on it and didn't let it completely dry first. so, when i faxed, there was a dark streak on the received copy. otherwise, i would still have my old one. if i ever need a 2nd printer, this is the one i'll look for first.
