When author Alan Butler discovered a 15-centimeter clay disc in a museum in Crete, he set out to unravel the mystery of the spiral by hieroglyphs inscribed on each side. The discovery of this Phaistos Disc crystallized Butlers previous convictions that Bronze Age peoples in Europe had been excellent mathematicians and astronomers.
