After this and Lost In Translation, I am done with Bill Murray for awhile. I don't know what it is about him that seems to attract these movies with no resolution at the end. It always starts well and I keep waiting for the end that ties it all together, the way a movie should, and yet it never happens. I felt cheated of the time I spent watching this, time I could have spent doing something else.

Bill Murray has created a great new career after Lost in Translation. He really is a great actor. He can display lots of emotions, and emote intensely without saying a word. He's become something of a "technique actor" without really trying. He's great to watch.
This movie wastes his talent, and the excellent ladies supporting him, too.
A movie should have an arc - a beginning, climax and ending.
It has one but not the other two.
Really, if you want to watch a great Bill Murray flick, stick with GroundHog day!

  VERY SLOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWWWW

i watched this movie because the box said it was a "romantic comedy" and that appealed to me... there is NOTHING funny about this movie!! nor is it romantic... i dont know what to call it, if i call it a comedy i think the only joke is me wasting time to watch it, if i call it a drama then its extreamly bland, and if i call it a romance then its seriously lacking.
this is a movie about a guy who gets an annonomous pink letter from an ex advising him that he has a 19yr son she never told him about because they broke up and she just wants to warn him that the son is looking for his father .... so he tracks down his exes from that period to visit and see if he can figure out which one wrote the letter.... the main character is supposed to be in a very meloncholy mood and they make the WHOLE movie feel that way so that the viewer feels that way too .... the movie has no closure in the end .... i think it may have been someones desperate attempt to be 'deep' and either they did a bad job at it or it went over my head .... the only thing i got out of the movie is that now the character will look at every young man he sees and wonder "is that my son", i suppose the message is to be careful of what you do today as it will have an impact on ur future, but the its definatly not worth the totrure of watching this movie to learn that!!!!
if you must watch it i recommend renting it but its noth worth the $20 to buy!!

  BROKEN FLOWERS

This film brought to mind the far superior 1986 documentary, "Sherman's March," in which filmmaker Ross McElwee retraces General Sherman's path through the South in a story seamlessly interwoven with his personal journey of getting dumped by his girlfriend and reconnecting with women from his past. "Broken Flowers" is an attractive production loaded with talented actors and graced by a delightful soundtrack, but Bill Murray plays the same detached, morally ambiguous character with zero emotional range we have seen in other films, and all four women he encounters on his quest are broadly stereotyped -- neither nuanced nor sympathetic. I give the film credit for telling a reasonably absorbing story without relying on violence or (much) sex to advance the narrative, and I was not troubled by the ambiguity that apparently irked some viewers, but the contrast between this and "Sherman's March" was like seeing a Cezanne still life compared with a paint-by-numbers bowl of fruit.

This is the worst movie I have seen in 5 years.....

I had high hopes for this movie. Alas it was a wasted sentiment.

It started off very s-l-o-w. It had a great premise. An aging Don Juan gets a mysterious letter saying he has a son....and he may be looking for him. So off he goes on a journey.

But...can Murray possibly have more of a complete stone face? His complete and total lack of any emotion was appalling. I kept waiting for this charming, charismatic man who seduced woman after woman to pop out. Nope. I thought this was a comedy/drama? No comedy. No drama.

In fact everyone in this movie acted with such stilted restraint in this movie it was painful. Very unrealistic. People do not act this way....

The conversations and time spent with each woman he once had a "relationship" or one night stand (we never know as they never once talk about anything much) are boring and again unrealistic. If someone I had not seen in 20 years showed up, I think I might have a couple questions, some animation. Either it be anger or surprise.

One other thing about this movie. It feels claustrophobic. Tight. Constricted. Scenes drag on forever. Shot of him sitting on his couch staring 2 min. Shots of him driving down the road (many of those) with horrendous jazz playing...dragging on for a minute. Just constant boring listless shots. It got to the point if I knew what he was going to do next- say go over to his neighbors house- I would fast forward...knowing it would be a boring drawn out walk over there. I never FF through movies, this one demanded it.

This really is a horrible movie. I wasted over 2 hours on this only to have the end....be a total dud. Bleck.

  Ah Bill Murray..

...usually just a look at the guy makes me laugh. He has wonderful comic expressions! But there are limitations to the entertainment-qualities throughout this entire movie. And the ending not being much of an ending at all was a slap in the face spending 90 minutes of my life just waiting for it. The movie serves a question, no satisfying answer. To me.

Murrays' previous "hit", that underwater-movie, was also horrible. Too easy, too simple. "Lost in translation" was beautiful. And proved a variety in Murrays' acting skills. Hoping for a more demanding part for him soon, it is easy to put a lot more into a movie that "Broken flowers" that in truth it deserves. Keep that in mind when you watch a movie that no matter what "has got to be good. Why otherwise would Murray be in it?"

This is a film that I can easily see how people might simply abhor it. The plot is slow, there is no real ending, there is not a lot of action, etc. The best part of this movie, however, is how the viewer can see how the happenings of the movie reflects their own lives. Bill Murray is an incredible actor, and movies like this and Steve Zissou are wonderful examples of where he has taken his acting ability since his comedy days. It is a sad movie that will leave you thinking about your own past loves and how they have affected your life. Again, it is really hit or miss just based on your personality, but I for one found it to be an incredible film.

  A Murray Movie

you'd really have to love Bill to enjoy this movie, it was typical BM and almost as enjoyable as a BM, super slow moving, Bill doesn't speak much because he's not really an actor. good thing I paid only a couple a bucks and free shipping, so I only wasted two dollars. even the ending sucked, just typical of Bills movies though, it's what I should of expected. If you don't like Bill alot, then this is one movie you should never see.

  Broken Flowers Anything But Broken

Do you like your acting cartoonish, like Al Pacino? Or do you like it understated and realistic in a way that respects your intelligence? If the latter, you should see Bill Murray in this performance. The film allows thinking people to think. It stimulates conversation and offers insight into human behavior. If you prefer not thinking and just watching explosions and car chases, skip it and look for Will Smith and Tom Cruise and Bruce Willis movies.

  Broken Flowers (2006)
Review created: 10/08/08

Quirky and bizarre movie with Bill Murray in the title role, about a man who tries to find a son he never knew he had by visiting several of his past loves. With Sharon Stone, a strange looking Tilda Swinton, Jessica Lange. Rated R - with language and nudity.
