A truly great Classic Western, which depects the Indians in a compassionate and respectful manner without the extreme pretense and pandering of Dances With Wolves. It has all the elements of a really good "Cowboy & Indian" shoot-em-up. Jimmy Stewart plays Tom Jeffords, who was an Indian Agent in the 1800's, and Jeff Chandler was nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Cochise, the Apache chief. There are the obligatory Indian cruelty scenes which infuriate the white men, and then, there is the betrayal and ambush of the Indians by the white men who never seem to be able to "keep their word". There is adventure, romance, charm, action & trajedy presented in such a way as to be emotionally satisfying on every level.
