This film has beautiful sweeping western landscape cinematography - absolutely gorgeous. The acting is more than impressive, the directing is top-notch and the writing really makes one think. If you watched "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer as a child and caught the making fun of misfits was wrong and maybe I should be more tolerant, too, then you will surely feel that way about this film. Gay and bisexual men are often put down for being unmanly, unnatural and just plain outright icky, but this film makes one really think... what would I have done had I been in his or her place? If you have heard there is lots of graphic sex in this film, you were misinformed... this is by far one of the most tame R-rated films of an adult nature I have viewed. This film will powefully move all to see it to tears, or very close to it. "Brokeback Mountain" is a fictional setting in rural Wyoming and was inspired by a short story from author Annie Proulx. Surpsisingly, this film touches on a widespread, but very taboo subject bi or gay married men cheating on their wives. However, the film is far more than a casual-fling type of story... it evolves into true love between two... men, masculine and good looking - something most big budget Hollywood films have rarely grazed over before. "Brokeback" will open your eyes, your mind and quite possibly even your heart - and just maybe there will more understanding and far less hatred towards those who are different from ourselves... or are they?

I just watched Brokeback Mountain for the first time last night after renting it on DVD and thought it was excellent. I was surprised by some plot twists which I hadn't heard previously, such as Ennis' wife discovering her husbands feelings for Jack when they (she and Jack) first meet. I also didn't realize that Jack is murdered in the movie. Overall, the acting was superb, especially that of Heath Ledger. It's easy to see why he was the front runner for the Oscar for so long, and actually it seems to me that he created a character from nothing whereas Philip Seymor Hoffman more or less did a good impersonation of Truman Capote (and really, what actor couldn't get mileage out of an easy person to imitate like Capote?). I think the gay theme of Brokeback scared the older Academy voters, who could vote for Best Director and Screenplay, but were fearful of rewarding the movie in the acting categories (Jake Gyllenhall, Michelle Williams and Anne Hathaway were exceptional) and as Best Picture. Crash was an engaging movie but far more flawed than Brokeback. The only real glitch I found in Brokeback was Ennis' sudden bravado when he first sees Jack years after their inital meeting on the mountain: Ennis is so guarded about everything he does, yet he wantonly risks being seen kissing Jack in the open at their second meeting, which of course his wife witnesses so easily from their apartment window. It would have seemed far more natural for Ennis to wait until he and Jack were alone, which they were less than an hour later. I think his lifelong fear of being discovered would have easily overrode his elation at seeing Jack again, especially when he knew they would be spending quality time alone after he introduced Jack to his wife. But overall, the movie is deeply rich in depicting the good and bad of human nature and in telling both a joyous and sad tale of two people in love who are forced to live in the shadows of society by ignorant mores of the day.

  BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN-unforgettable

This movie 'BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN', is a lesson in human nature, love, happiness, and pain. It's not a 'chik flick', nor boring. The actors, and actresses are great, and really carried of their parts very well. One can't help to see the love, and pain between these two characters, and in the families. The violent parts (small) were more troubling than the 'so called sex', also very brief, and it's only suggested, not seen. This movie still haunts me about how short, fleeting life, and love is, but the spirit, and thoughts endure. I am not a cryer, but this movie 'broke' me, & left a 'mountain' of emotion, & thoughts.

a must see movie that can leave you in tears. this movie is moving in many ways. the characters play a superb performances. I would recommend it because it is a movie that you can actually learn from, unlike other movies that are a waste of your time, this movie is definitely not WASTE OF YOUR TIME!

the extras are good as well. the behind the scenes part is a good way to visualize the set. a good commentary is also added.

many felt this movie was one of the best of the year. Good directing/ well edited and the screen play is second to none.

A+++

the movie can seem a little long though.

  Worst film ever!
Review created: 03/28/06

This movie is THE worst movie ever made and somehow manages to make Maria Carey's "Glitter" look like an Oscar winner. I urge all people of common sense to avoid this waste of time film. The only good thing about this film is the scenery which is very nice to look at, the problem is that even this is flawd b/c you have to endure the acting and story of the film to observe the breath taking and beatuiful scenes of nature.

The acting is horrible and the sexual content is far too graphic for a "R" raiting , this film deserves an NC-17 or even a XXX raiting. This film is not safe for children at all, nor adults under the age of 21. I was horrified at how much is shown in this film, and became physically ill shortly after watching the main sex scene. I feel mentally scared, seriously i'm not making it up.

In closing this film is a 100% homosexual film, made by homosexuals for homosexuals, this is not a straight flick. However their are those in the media and in the entertainment industry that would have you believe that this film is beautifull and a heart warming tale of love. It is not, what it in fact is a propiganda film that seeks to brain wash the majority into accepting homosexuality.

I have no problemo with homosexuals, what I do have a problem with is lies, and propiganda that is pushed upon the populace by corporations and private interest groups that only wish to promote their own selfish goals and care not for the status of society.

  A True Work Of Art
Review created: 09/09/06

I was blown away by this film. It's so powerful and full of raw emotions that I can't shake it even several days later. I like it better and better.

The story develops slowly and I started out thinking that the characters were pretty unsympathetic, but all of a sudden I was 110% emotionally invested in the story which then seemed so much more powerful exactly because no idealisation had been done.

The film is tricky to read in several places and the ambiguity and the unsaid speak louder than the dialog. The attention you can feel has been paid to minute details forces you to pay attention and think both while and after you've seen the it. There's a lot to admire and notice, even on subsequent viewings.

Outstanding camera work and scenery, jaw dropping performances and a truly complex yet gripping story line.

One of the most touching and beautiful movies ever made. A must see. Ang Lee is genius at work. The performances by both leads are definitely career-makers and they deserved their Academy Award nominations. This movie gices the best description of what its like to find yourself sudenly in love but out of the norm in the real America ( not the big cities) that I could ever imagine. The movie does the short story justice--nothing short of a miracle.

I honestly believe this movie is for the open minded human. A beautifully shot movie with acting that was memorable. The movie touched on the side on humanity that few will venture. A "gay" cowbay is totally taboo in this testosterone driven liveliehood. This picture portrays the struggle that two men have to endure dealing with their relationship. Acting that deserves accolades and directing that makes one understand the point of the movie. It is a love affair, its just between two men. A humanistic movie worth seeing and buying.

Anyone who can say that the two main actors in this movie don't deserve oscars is an idiot! For two straight guys to play these parts is a stretch in itself, but for them to play them so well as to make this movie the heart wrenching love story that it is, is nothing short of extreme professionalism. I, too, was a little shocked by the main sex scene, but I believe that was the point. What kept my attention, however, was the true to life struggle and suffering they endured because of their relationship. This is a must see film! And I don't feel that it is unsafe for our children as some have ventured to say. My three year old son watched this movie with me and my husband (we covered his eyes for the tent scene, of course) and I don't feel he was traumatized. In fact, I don't think he thought much about it at all. After all, what's the difference in watching two men embrace than a man and a woman? It's all the same and this movie shows that love is just what you make of it. It was very well written and even better acted.

this movie is for everyone, I truly love this movie, it is now apart of history, anyone whom has sit and watched this movie with an open mind or not, has learned just how similiar relationships & people are in this world...I have seen this movie umpteenth times, and I am a huge fan, the actors are more than believable, if you choose to not see this movie based on gossip...you are missing out on a historical movie....the movie may have been snubbed at the oscars but the numbers don't lie....more awards than any other movie in history, and no other movie has ever touched the world as this movie has..and to be honest, their is not much (sexual interaction) in this movie, the movie is shown in a correct way that shows the truth about gay relationships and their hardships, you too will fall in love with Jack & Ennis.....

This movie was great. It's not for children (as "History of Violence" or "Crash" aren't for children). I didn't cry like alot of people but I was moved. Great acting by Heath, Jake, Michelle, Anne, and the lady that played the mother! This movies topic isn't for everyone but it is a well made film. I'm sorry but Crash wasn't half as good as this movie.

  Excellent movie...

It is unfortunate that people's innate prejudice towards homosexuality leads them to go into this movie with a closed mind. Too many of the reviewers seemed to have already made their mind up before even seeing this film. I went into this movie without expecting much either way. Needless to say, I was very impressed. The principle thing that stands out in my mind is Ang Lee's ability to convey so eloquently the conflicting love that these two men feel towards one another. Nothing ever feels forced, or in your face... more than anything you feel the resistance of the characters at every turn. This is what true love should really feel like, and it shows. Love can have no bounds, and seem impossible to restrain. This movie is a perfect example of this. I would gather that the same situation between people in a heterosexual light would gather rampant praise from all the homophobic people in this society. It is sad to say that they couldn't open their minds enough to appreciate the beauty of the film. Look, I can understand someone being put off by males kissing or what have you... but to those people I suggest maybe reading the short story that the movie was based off of first. The message is what is important, no matter how you obtain it.

Pros:
Excellent acting
Beautiful cinematography
Excellent neutrality that leaves it up to the viewer to decide (although if you aren't swayed at least a little bit, the only explanation is a complete rejection of the story on your part)
Great critique of the unnecessary sense of masculinity that affects both straight and gay males alike

Cons:
The initial sexual encounter between Jack and Ennis may be too quick for people who are not prepared

I think this is one of those movies that you really just have to see for yourself, rent it if you must. But if you really want a piece of art that will force other people in your own life to question their own stereotypes or even hatred towards other people, just buy it.

At last a gay movie without the typical stereotypes of drag queens, effeminate types, leather men and the like - which are not typical of gay life. As a heterosexual person, one would not be being honest if one did not say that this is a great love story, with great passion, feeling and sensibility. Set in times when it was tough for one man to love another, here we see that love is indeed a force of nature, which has been around since the dawn of time.

The year is 1963, Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist do not yet realize that herding sheep in the Mountains of Brokeback would forever bond them through life. Through complications, joys, and heartache these two men are put through the ultimate testament of just how love overcomes it all. As life after Brokeback goes on, they are both determined to evolve into how the world accepts love with a man and women but not two men. Ennis and Jack make life elswhere while thousands of miles apart each married with children, but each knowing that they are grasping to articulate a love that is forbidden....somewhere out there. As time passes neither of the two seeing one another, Jack Twist drives from life down in Texas to visit Ennis up in Wyoming, the minute Jack arrives it is apparent that time between these two has not changed the way they feel, however they have been exposed....yes someone knows their secret...and love in the Ennis Del Mar household will never be the same. Over the next several years Ennis and Jack go back to old Brokeback Mountain and share their love, and their pain. While Jack wants to hide his love no longer, Ennis remains ashamed of their love and in the end.... both men lose what they longed for...though Brokeback will always be.....................

  It's a Love story
Review created: 08/08/07

There was so much controversy about this film that was all based on the misunderstanding of the message.
This is a not a “gay cowboy movie “ This is not about Gay sex. It is about 2 men who love each other in a time and place where than can not be themselves. If you think there are no gay cowboys think again.
It is a story of LOVE, missed chances and lost love. The sex scene is so deluded that it could be on prime time.
It is a story about 2 People who can’t be themselves and have to hide and never bee happy as themselves.
It is a sad and at time heartbreaking story that may change your heart.

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie!
First, the writer, producer, director, cast and crew are to be commended for taking a subject that is still so taboo in today's society (21st century!), and making a film that is very warm and heart felt.
It does not take a gay or lesbian person to appreciate the feelings portrayed in this film. I believe the film touches on the subject in just the right way to have everyone understand the frustration, trials and tribulations of the main characters.
I have and will continue to endorse this picture. And to the people who cannot get past the 'gay cowboy' thing, you're missing out on a wonderful film. This film actually could be about any relationship between two people who are not allowed to be together in love due to prejudice.

I have seen the movie and aside from the homosexual acts that it portrays, this movie is fictional about the ways of a cowboy. Sheep aren't herded with horses people use dogs or follow them with a sheep wagon and no rancher in his right mind would send two new cowboys up ontop of a mountain with over a thousand sheep. They don't put sheep and mountains like that. Also the Big Horn mountain range is not near Riverton Wy. But near Big Horn and Sheridan Wy. The way this movie portrays an American Icon is just wrong. The movie was terrible and fictional.
