Album Notes Hed P.E.: Jahred (vocals, guitar); Chad (guitar, turntables); Mawk (bass); B.C. (drums). Additional personnel: Kerry Freeman, Trista Redavid, Bobby Ikeda, Matthew Pact, Kristy Herndon (background vocals); Serj Tankian, Morgan Lander, East Bay Ray. Recorded at Sweet Tea, Oxford, Mississippi; The Machine Shop, Hoboken, New Jersey; The Hit Factory, New York, New York. These entrants into the rap-metal sweepstakes don't miss a trick. The vocals expertly blend Anthony Kiedis-meets-Ice-T rapping with Alice In Chains-on steroids rock howling. The music displays a similarly accomplished blending of elements, deftly utilizing blazing metal riffs, hip-hop rhythms, and touches of electronica and industrial rock. It all works in the service of a tightly-wound, claustrophobic sonic environment that communicates the angst of the average, alienated individual in the modern world. Although at times it's hard to tell whether BROKE is meant to be music to accompany the impending apocalypse or to express the state of mind intrinsic to a post-apocalyptic world, in either case, it's hard-hitting, unsettling stuff. Fans of Korn, Limp Bizkit, et al will certainly find a lot to like here.
