Classic and not so classic 30s movie musicals
Having seen musical excerpts of 'Broadway Melody of 1936' on the 'Singing in the Rain' DVD etras disc, I'd been waiting for the actual movie to appear for several years. I wasn't disappointed and can cheerfully endorse BM of 36 as one the the best musicals of all time. The transfer quality is excellent and the extras, brilliant.
On the other hand, "Broadway Melody of 1938' was a disappointment. Apart from Judy Garland's 'Dear Mr Gable', the musical numbers are forgettable and the script, less than adequate. The extras, however, make up for the main movie and so far as the transfer quality is concerned, it's very good.
So overall I can give this 2-disc set the top rating, even if it's mostly for 'Broadway Melody of 1936'. Recommended for all classic musicals fans and those who love Judy Garland, as do I.
