Publisher's Note For many years botanists and ecologists have been producing classic accounts of plant communities. Yet there has been no recent attempt to summarize this work and provide a systematic and comprehensive classification of British plant communities. In 1975 a program of research was begun to remedy this situation, and this initiative finally comes to fruition with the publication of the first of five volumes under the title British Plant Communities. Volume 1 covers woodlands and scrub. The book begins with an introduction to methodology and provides an identification key, but the bulk of the book is devoted to community descriptions, supplemented by extensive floristic tables. Each description provides information on synonymy, constant species, rare species, physiognomy, habitat, zonation and succession, distribution and affinities. All those concerned with the plant community of Britain, including botanists, ecologists, and conservation biologists, will find this an indispensable reference work.
