British space-rockers Hawkwind made their reputation as a noise-drenched alternative to the psychedelia of Pink Floyd. Their live shows, more the sound of being caught in a rocket's blast-trail than in the meditative hum of space, immersed the listener in a wall of echo that could create aural hallucinations. BRING ME THE HEAD OF YURI GAGARIN presents the band at their 1973 peak, with their lineup featuring future Motorhead Lemmy on bass and journalist Robert Calvert reciting poetry and on vocals for some songs. The bootleg-quality recordings are rough, but that only adds to the power of the freeform noise.
