Movie Description
One of the all-time great war films, THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI is yet another classic from the marvelous David Lean (LAWRENCE OF ARABIA, DR. ZHIVAGO). The film is an outstanding, psychologically complex adaptation of Pierre Boulle's 1952 novel, a classic story of English POWs in Burma forced to build a bridge to aid the war effort of their Japanese captors. British and American intelligence officers conspire to blow up the structure, but Col. Nicholson (a fabulous Alec Guinness), the commander who supervised the bridge's construction, has acquired a sense of pride in his creation and tries to foil their plans. Although credited to screenwriter Carl Foreman, the script was actually written by blacklisted writer Michael Wilson. The film garnered seven Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor (Guinness). The climax is one of the great finales in film history.

1957 Classic VHS to 2008 2-Disc DVD: Special Features
    Review created: 07/20/08(updated 07/20/08)
51 of 51 people found this review helpful.

Since I've already provided a critique of the 1957 VHS version of this WWII, 7 Oscar awarded classic, the purpose of this review is to distinguish between the VHS version & this 2008 2-disc DVD set with special features.

Included on the 2nd disc of the DVD set is commentary by 2 of the actors: Sessue Hayakawa & Jack Hawkins. "The Colonel Bogie March" is yet another new addition. What makes owning this DVD set most worthwhile are the documentary, the featurette, a bonus short & photo 'gallery'.

What's more the widescreen enhanced version is much more suitable to the panoramic proportions of the film. Also, now that the soundtrack has been updated to Dolby Digital 5.1 & Dolby Digital mono (in English) & Dolby Digital 5.1 (in French) the sensationalism of the film's finale is grander by far.

In addition, for the hearing-impaired & non-English viewers, there are subtitles in both English & French. My only suggestion to make this set more accessible to wider audience is adding Spanish subtitles in future editions.

Since ethnocentricity undoubtedly comes into play, the story itself is a biased view of a WWII period piece, & reviewers often consider the film to be in the genre of political "black comedies," these aspects make the documentary all the more significant to view & own~
