  It's a classic among RPGs

Even if you're not a devout RPG fan, you are bound to hear this title come
up. Breath of Fire started on the SNES and continues to thrive. Breath
of Fire 3 has the ever important storyline that keeps players guessing and
always the two characters that appear in every Breath Of Fire. The music
is pretty and graphics are nice on the eyes. As far as gameplay it can
be exhausting for the not so avid RPG fanatic but fun to overcome. It's also got some simple but fun mini-games (fishing, fairies, and masters). This game is top-notch and easily worth the price.

Probably my favorite Rpg of the ps1 era.

This game is absolutely fantastic. The plot starts off alittle bit slow, but it quickly builds up once you defeat the chimaera in the mountains (the first boss you fight in the game).

The characters are all great, and are built upon pretty well (much better than how all the final fantasies usually only focus on 2 or 3 main characters for development). Each character has a great set of moves, and the spell animations for each move are all very smoothly animated and very colorful.

The environments are pretty well constructed and are very beautifully details and colorful. They are also pretty varied, woodland, grassland, caverns, machine factories, volcanos, temples, beaches, etc.

The plot is pretty good, with some nice twists, but I won't spoil too much here.

The other cool part of the game is the fairy village that you micromanage and build up. Its very cool because as you expand the village more things can be done, including cloning items! (so save up your status increasing items, like + strength, +hp, +mana, etc because you can clone them unlimited times!)

Anyways, this game is very well made and is definitely the best of the breath of fire series. And do not worry about not having played 1 or 2. Because this games plot is not linked to the previous games in a way that you will miss out on plot elements. The only thing linking the 2 is that Ryu (the main character) is the last "known" surviving member of the brood, a clan of people that can turn into dragons. These beings were inherently evil with the exception of some members, including Ryu's relatives (Father?, grandfather?) who were the main characters of the previous 2 games.

This game definitely deserves 5/5, and has alot more creativity to the game than most final fantasies.

Breath of Fire III (Playstation) Game Review
Review created: 01/01/08

I originally bought this game when it first came out years ago for about $10 new. After losing it during a cross country trip I went to buy another copy - I was shocked to see prices in the range of $100 - $250 new; scratched game disks without covers or documentation selling for as high as $80 as well.

Anyway, this little RPG is by far the best I've ever played, and, I was able to get a copy (lightly scratched and no documentation for $30 on ebay) recently.

The problem with many RPG's is that there is no replayability. Not so in the case of Breath of Fire III (Playstation). The storyline is great and the characters are likable. The cartoonish graphics are actually quite desireable.

What's the game about? Well, it's a lot of things to many people. It is about a small child that was orphaned into the world without hope. He follows his sense of right and developes his leadership skills throughout the game. He and a group of aquired friends, all of whom were "alone against the world", join as a team to overcome many obstacles while on a quest to meet with god - they want an answer to a question. During their quest they encounter, and overcome, monsters, gangsters, a corrupt political leader, thugs, ghosts, robots, etc. They deal with just about all the things that we fear in real life from childhood thru adulthood. They even get to save a few victims along the way and
assist the needy with some community service activities (of sorts).

Bottomline - this game is a true RPG and a lot of fun.

I like this game because my son likes it. It's one that we attempted to buy on Ebay a couple of years ago, but our money was returned to us because apparently a fire had burned up the copy that we bought. So the fact that this one was available and arrived at our house unburned makes my son very happy. So happy that he wanted the next one, too.

This is my favorite game of all time. I played FF9 and FF7 before it. Then I found this on a shelf for 10 bucks and begged my dad to get it for me. Turned out being my favorite game ever. Definitely the best RPG on the market in my opinion. I would highly recommend any RPGer to this game. This is a classic.

An Epic story, a cast of memorable characters and a ton of customization options are what makes this game unforgettable.

Sure, it can be a little too easy using everything at hand but there are ways to enjoy all it's depth (limitations in levels and no dragons for boss fights).

This is one of my favorite games from childhood.

The storyline is so great... it always had my attention.

I just wish more Breath of Fire games would be created. This one would probably be one of the best Breath of Fire games in the series.

  Breath of Fire III
Review created: 06/16/09

This game is exceptionally good.

If you can stand the effects of Final Fantasy VII, you can play this game.

It's a bit choppy, but well worth game play. The camera angles are poor, but you get the idea.

The only thing I suggest in this game, is that you extensively fight, and try to build levels. The final boss was extremely hard to fight, even at a high level. The fishing feature is very well done. It's hard to catch certain fish, and does have its benifits in the game.

Overall, a must have for RPG collectors. This game is hard to find with original booklet, and hard to find a pristine copy for cheap. I've bought many copies of this game to find a barely used booklet.

Value your games well.

  Breath of Fire
Review created: 02/26/09(updated 08/18/09)

In most role-playing games, the player finds himself in the role of an adventurer who, sooner or later, must meet and defeat a fire-breathing dragon. But in a nice change of pace, Capcom's new RPG Breath of Fire III allows you to be adventurer and dragon all rolled into one.

You play Ryu (or whatever you want to call him - the game leaves it up to you), the last of a race of beings who once sought to rule the world. A dragon that appears in the form of a young boy most of the time, Ryu travels the globe in a quest to reunite with two friends. But as his journey unfolds, he uncovers the truth behind their disappearances, as well as a larger plot of unspeakable evil - one that only Ryu can stop.

RPG fans have heard this kind of story before, and in many respects, they've played this game before. Breath of Fire III has all the standard RPG trappings: the "you hit me, now I hit you" combat engine, control over a multiple-character party, and a number of smaller quests you have to accomplish along the way to finishing the overall one. This is not necessarily a criticism. Innovation is none too common in the world of RPGs, and even "cutting-edge" examples such as Final Fantasy VII stay pretty much within the narrow path beaten by their predecessors. But Breath of Fire III does bring a few fresh offerings to the table, such as its "examine" command, fishing minigame, masters' apprenticeship, and, most notably, its dragon gene system.

The examine command is an option you can choose for any or all of your characters during battle. It instructs them to watch their enemies as they perform specialized attacks - and if they're lucky, pick up the attack as their own, which often comes in handy in later battles. Whenever you decide to visit a fishing spot, a fishing minigame provides you with the chance to catch different status-enhancing fish (eating a rainbow trout restores magic points, blowfish cure poison, and so on). It's kind of fun and doesn't take up too much time, making it pretty much like any other minigame found in a RPG, but hey, it's fishing! Apprenticing to one of the world's masters entails different requirements for each master, such as providing a certain item, money, or nothing at all, and pays off in status bonuses that sometimes take away a few points from other areas as well. When it comes down to it, it's just another way to build up your characters, though the variety's nice.

The dragon gene system is one of the most notable features of the title. Instead of just turning into one dragon, Ryu can become every dragon by combining different dragon stones found throughout the game. The more powerful the form he takes on, the more magic points get sucked up each round of battle, and the more quickly he reverts back to boyhood. The key is to find the right balance of strength, breath attacks, and stamina. With 18 stones in all, you can spend a lot of time experimenting with different combinations and effects.

Graphically, Breath of Fire III straddles the line between 2D and 3D, with sprite-based graphics in an isometric 3D environment. The effect breathes some life, if not fire, into the traditional RPG look, sort of like Konami's Suikoden with a greater feeling of depth. It's an interesting attempt, but the style is a little too cartoonish for my liking. The soundtrack is above average, with a variety of tracks ranging from the expected epic style to what's best summed up as "RPG lounge."

Not everything is right in fantasyl

  Dragons and Gods
Review created: 06/16/08(updated 06/16/08)

Breath of Fire III is a game where you are an orphan of the Dragon Clan. Along the way you meet those of the Wind Clan, weretigers, sentient onions, and more. Your main character can turn into a variety of dragons by mixing and matching Dragon Genes, and you can even learn skills from enemies from observing them.

Overall, I enjoy the game, and find the world and characters interesting. The side games like the fairies and fishing are also great ways to kill time.

This was the first installement of Breath of Fire on the Playstation. It is an engaging and entertaining RPG yarn. Not quite as techno as Final Fantasy.. more an old school Suikoden style RPG.
