An excellent commentary on the perils of technology.

The world that incubated the thought of Aldous Huxely during his writing of Brave New World was not so very different from our own. The fact that at the time there was much uncertainty of the coming dangers of technology and society the future would face, fostered Huxley's inspiring assessment. The western world sat on the brink of chaos that the aggressors of WWII would soon bring. We live in a time of similar uncertainty and as the world returns to entropy, Brave New World is no less poignant in the lessons it seeks to explain.
Brave New World is an excellent book, particularly considering its age. The storyline delves into the bizarre and outright absurd, but when you consider how absurd our world would seem to societies over 100 years ago, perhaps its not that far off.
There is no doubt Huxley hit the nail on the head with some of his analysis and who can say what the distant future still holds in store for us. Modern authors, like Benjamin Barber, use examples from works like Brave New World to demonstrate the downfall of modern society.
Uniquely brilliant and an overall great story that inspires thought, and there's no harm in that.

This book is one of my favorite books. The themes of escapism are fasinating. I also enjoyed the character development.
I read this book in high school and really enjoyed it and so I decided to buy it.

Great book, a little of sci-fi and philosphy mixed in:

Perhaps the only mark against it, if any, is the very beginning when there is a walk-through of the production plant that creates the people and their demeanors...alot of fictional scientfic jargon so-for me-I recall muddling through the first couple of pages vaguely having a clue, but able to put some pieces together.

That aside, the book is great...it is as the description says, an artificial society where people take drugs (soma) to adjust their moods and are not challenged to do anything, more or less. Then in comes a man (the savage) who is like you or I and he is struggling to understand this...new world...no pun intended :-)

Before that is the character Bernard who is a lowly guy on the social measure in this place and when he finds and befriends the savage he rises up in prestige and popularity...to the point where I remember him changing into somebody I didn't like...

The best part, to this day, for me is a part where the savage has an audience with one of the VIP's of this society and they are having a discussion of beliefs and the savage argues that, if the drugs and conditioning control you then what about love or passion? The VIP says if you want then then you have hate or jealousy or heartache...you are actually asking for the right to be unhappy?

And the savage says "yes I do, I choose the right to be unhappy." And the VIP just replies, a little confused..."You're welcome"

It was something like that...it was that line: "I choose the right to be unhappy" LOL, isn't that always the way? Anyways, read it and enjoy because as far as suggusted readings may go you could do a whole lot worse then this!

It's a classic. Everybody should buy it!
Review created: 10/26/09

I loved the book.
I decided to buy it because many friends told me it's one of the best books they've ever read and they're right.
I do recommend this book to everybody that likes a challenging reading.
The vocabulary is complicated with a lot of scientific terms but it does not obstruct the understanding of the main idea of the book.

A++

I bought it because of a college class where it was required reading. I really enjoyed the book. It was a great dystopian novel that is parallel to what's happening with society in so many ways today.

Brave New World by Aldous Huxley
Review created: 08/13/09

This is one of the very few books I remember reading in school. There are only about 3 books I read my entire time in school. This is why I distrust the educational system and why I believe they conspire against me.

Rather than trying to write a brilliant review of a work I only vaguely remember, I shall relate to you what I do remember. Trust that I will soon reread this novel (and you will get a fresh review, when I do), as I believe all the dystopian novels are worth rereading (we proles still don't get it).

I'm not sure if it was my Junior or Senior year in high school. I had been sent to an alternative school for being arrested with marijuana. Because I was facing drug tests I replaced pot with LSD. I was growing my hair long. I had an older gentleman for an English teacher. It was one of the few subjects that I enjoyed. This teacher fellow struck me as perhaps an alcoholic. He was quite bumbling as well, though I rather liked his romantic notions and long vocal remembrances of the 60s and the girls he had known.

I remember when Brave New World was passed out to the class while he stuttered and stammered about. I was probably the only one excited to get the novel. As I said, I had done next to no reading in school.

Upon beginning the book I was instantaneously transported from the classroom and away from people which I despised into the future of mankind. The people I had been with in the classroom were the same social order of the future. Huxley's vision was disturbing and a most logical portrait in sociocultural, scientific and political evolution.

I remember being mildly shocked at the explicit nature of Huxley. I remember reading about the sucking vibrators and the socialization of sex. I became aroused and when the class was over I had to leave awkwardly with my books hiding my arousal. Perhaps this was not as indicative of Huxley's writing as it was my teenage hormones.

It was always strange to look up from the book, breaking the spell, to realize I was still sitting in class. I don't remember many details of the novel. I remember empathizing with the main character and his morals, and I have a fondness of Lenina, though I can't remember why...

I really must read this again!

  Good book
Review created: 12/07/08

This was a good book. What I find frightening is how much our soceity has become sort of like it. Never questioning the authority, just doing what they are told and never thinking for themselves. Perfect little right wingers arent they...You know soma..The military did do research with LSD back in the early 50's as a way to control people. Brave New World discribes a combination of drug and brainwashing and breeding to control the population. Id recommend everyone read it..Im like the savage, always questioning authority, always trying to do my own thing...

This book was a suprise(good) for me
Review created: 11/13/08

I dont know how I got recommended to this book,I think it was maybe a college prof of mine, but it was suprisingly different from any other books I had read from this era. Set in a future where promiscuity and a "deviant" lifestyle are the norm, it uses individualtity or the want to different (actually more conservative than the status quo) as the catalyst for the civil unrest that is the main storyline of the book. There are a ton of life lessons glimpsed as warnings about excess, and possibaly too much technology, being the stumbling blocks for this society. A very good and different read, I have read it several times myself.

  Brave New World
Review created: 07/06/08

This world is very different than our own. The author does a good job of showing how ridiculous a society like this is, and unfortunately how our society is moving towards it. Here babies aren't made between two people and "parents" are considered laughable. In their world, babies are made in testtubes and are conditioned into a caste level. There are no choices or individualism, just society and working towards the greater good.

Very interesting book. It shows how things could become if technology advances too far....and what it would be like to have complete/unnatural order and happiness. The book asks you whether happiness can be acheived through medicine, and if you are really happy only if sleep conditioning and pills tell you that you are. This book really makes you think.

  FREE 64gb iPod Touch
Review created: 05/18/08(updated 09/11/09)

--->***(L@@K HERE) FREE 64gb iPod Touch***<----

Have a LOOK at this WEBSITE first:
http://www.YourFreeiStuff.com/index.php?ref=4302112

Just take 2 minutes and read this. This is very EASY to do! It literally takes 10 minutes to setup. Simply follow the steps below. I promise you, this is 100% real. I would not jeopardize my eBay account status if this were a fraud. My feedback is real. Here is what you do. Click on the link below, register, pick an account type (referral is the easiest) and complete just 1 offer (Very important that you complete an offer otherwise your account will sit in limbo until you do). This is not like other sites where you need to complete one offer on 2 or 3 different pages. Many of these offers are FREE TRIALS with nothing else to buy with NO COMMITMENTS!

-Step 1: Copy & Paste this link to your address bar:

http://www.YourFreeiStuff.com/index.php?ref=4302112

-Step 2: Sign up and chose an account type (Referral is the easiest and best).

-Step 3: Complete just 1 offer (I recommend EyeMyCredit). If you do not cancel your membership within the 7-day trial period, you will be billed $12.95 for each month that you continue your membership. :-D Trust me choose this offer and check your credit report as well. Remember to cancel your membership within 7-day, if you do not want to get billed $12.95.

-Step 4: Then Refer 8 people to do the same as you did.
*** It is very important to do Step 3 first then refer 8 people to do the same (use eBay, MySpace, Face Book, blogs, friends, etc.! Do what I did; copy my ad). ***

-Step 5: Once everything is 100% complete just place your order. Then you will receive your 64 GB iPod Touch for FREE in several weeks (I got mine in less than a week and The SHIPPING is FREE!). Trust me it is worth it.

The reason these companies make money, is that most people do not bother getting all the referrals. All you have to do is post it on eBay or other website I mention before! They use us as advertisement by word of mouth, which saves those tons of money that goes toward yours and my gift. These are legit companies such as Blockbuster, Netflix, Game fly, etc... You can copy my listing if you want. You must use your own authentic link though. You will get your own personal link after you signed up and choose an account type.

I know this sounds ridiculous but it works! For proof that this is for real, copy and paste the link below to your address bar. Transcendent Innovations is behind everything.
