Braun Aromaster KF 420

I reviewed many publications and looked at many different models. I decided to purchase this coffee maker based upon a Consumer Reports recommendation as being a Best Buy. We only use a coffee maker on special occasions, so I did not want to spend a lot of money on a new coffee maker. Our other coffee maker, a Krups, lasted for 13 years. The Braun KF420 was a very good value as it included a permanent gold filter. This coffee maker has been very reliable so far and we have not had any problems. If you are looking for a basic coffee maker with a gold permanent filter that is reliable, you really cannot beat the value.
Though upon first inspection, you can tell that this is not a "high end" coffee maker. It does not have any "bells and whistles" like a timer or water filter like that of other models. The pot has a plastic lid, and attached to the lid is a hard, transparent spout cover. This spout cover keeps the pot sealed to minimze evaporation when sitting on the warmer. The spout cover pivots open when pouring coffee and then pivots back to the closed position when warming. Many of the pivot points and joints where the spout cover and the lid attach are made of plastic, and I could see where these might become a problem over time with heavy use and could be more prone to breaking. The overall design is good; however, it just does not have the feel and image of a "high end" appliance.
Overall, like I said, it is a good value for the money if you just need a basic, no-frills coffee maker with a permanent filter. However, if you want an appliance with more features or a more upscale appearance, then I would choose another model.
