This is an ultra-fascinating book about the recently learned capabilities of the brain. It focuses on the extreme adaptability of the brain and discusses many and varied case histories.

This book gives many examples of people who recovered from seemingly impossible physical problems; apparently due to the brain reprogramming itself or rerouting itself. It offers hope and suggestions for people who have many different ailments. For me I hope to be able to retrain my brain to heal or ignore pain.
The book is quite technical but most is explained in common english for people like myself. My Husband also read the book and was excited at the prospect of using his brain to improve his health.
We saw the author on TV and looked for it on eBay.Would recommend it to anyone who is interested in Physical and mental issues and even Doctors may like a better understanding of the changes the brain can make in order to help their patients.

I bought this book for a class. I got it in timely fashion from the seller, it was the cheapest price I found, which is great because my other books have been ungodly expensive. It was in good condition, I have no complaints! And much praise!

A non fiction page-turner that will likely change you!
Review created: 06/05/09

Did you ever read a book that just clicked? At first it's just about brain science and some people and discoveries you probably never heard about. Then you see how some of it applies to you and your life, or maybe to some friends or family. If you have ever read any motivational books, some things in the book will make you think, oh yeah... that seems almost obvious, except it's all about the physical brain. If you like facts and fascination, especially as it relates to how the brain works and brain health, this book is for you.

If you or someone you care about has ever been an addict or struggled with habits that are hard to break, this book could be a huge blessing as it helps you understand how our brains can work against us, and that understanding might make a real difference.

I have one caution. If it were a movie, I would have to rate the book R or X. You don't want your children reading certain chapters. I don't think a conservative religious person would find it offensive, but the book covers some aspects of perversion and how it comes about that you may find shocking or revolting. Never-the-less, I would recommend this book for all adults.

  Neuroplasticity
Review created: 09/08/08

Upon the recommendation of a colleage I purchased this book. I must say that it is as spellbinding as any work of fiction and a great deal more encouraging. The scientific breakthroughs and the men and women who toil behind closed doors- often in the face of terrific antagonism by both the scientific community and members of the laity alike- speaks volumes for their dedication and devotion to bettering the lives of all mankind. Doidge's style and presentation allow any reader- professional or the casually interested- to become engrossed in these breakthrough experiments. This book is useful as a tool too for every one of us knows somebody who is struggling with the decline in mental function as they age and many more us know of someone whose development was arrested at some stage and have lost momentum in their quest for normalcy. No reader will go away disatisfied or without a nugget or two of information to share with others. I would strongly recommend this book with special emphasis to those who deal with the aged or the developmentally challenged.

The Brain That Changes Itself by Norman Doidge
Review created: 07/07/08(updated 08/08/08)

Dr Bob Guns suggested that I read this book. I was so surprised that the first chapter described how I began to act following a Traumatic Brain Injury in 2003. I was able to email Dr Doidge through his publicist and he put me in contact with Yuri Danilov. Yuri was mentioned in the first chapter also. He is a neuro scientist who specializes in rehabilitation. I will be able to see Yuri for treatment at the University of Wisconsin, School of Medicine, Research Dept in late July. I'm thrilled to learn that someone on this universe knows what happened to me and is finally able to help me after 4 1/2 years. This book vindicated me and validated that I had suffered a Trumatic Brain Injury and that I wasn't faking my injury. I feel truly blessed that I was able to find this wonderful book and hope that others like me with a Traumatic Brain Injury will also find themselves somewhere in the pages of this book and be able to get help too.
