Album Notes BRACE YOURSELF is an EP of tasty left-overs from the deluge of compositions Mu-Ziq (real name: Mike Paradinas) recorded for 1997's LUNATIC HARNESS. After making a large number of them available on his website, Paradinas asked fans to vote for which ones should be included on his next release. So, among other things, BRACE YOURSELF is a chance for listeners to wander through Mu-Ziq's sonic vaults. What you'll hear lying around is another batch of pieces that heed the modernist composer traditions of Eno and Glass, propelled by finely cut beats that bring to mind a mutation of bedroom-sized Roni Sizes and Elvin Joneses. The songs may be built using cut-n-splice methodology and electronic textures, but they're also organic in their structure. Some use the theme/variations/theme form inherent to jazz tunes, bringing the listener in with a simple melody before Paradinas begins the avalanche of beats. Others maintain an ambient melodicism, constantly underpinned by an accelerating rhythmic propulsion. All, as the album title implies, can knock a casual listener for a loop. But Mu-Ziq's is among the more unique sonic kingdoms, and BRACE YOURSELF is as fine a starting point to explore it as any.
