The Boys in the Band (2008, DVD)

I first saw this movie, many years ago, in VHS format and had always wanted to include it in my DVD collection. Aside from all the good things that movie critics had to say about this movie, it was my connection to the birthday celebrant that made it more meaningful and enjoyable. Yes, a pot-faced gay man does have to put more effort into looking the best he could to the public, and especially to other gay men as the subculture is so into "looking good". Even after all the effort is put in, a critical view of one's face in the mirror can end up with a phone call to his friends canceling his night out with them, or in this case, night in. Yet, he shows up to his birthday party with his best feature, his WIT, and so eloquently "reads out" his guests. The other characters were also enjoyable as I found a little of myself in each of them, well except for the straight guy. I thought he was too traumatized about his ex-close friend's feelings towards him that he would end up at a "gay" party asking "why?". This is definitely a "talk" movie that will keep you listening. Every time you view it, you might discover other character nuances that slipped by before. This movie has quite a few gay stereotypes, yet still reveals how different we all are as our pains are experienced in different ways during different parts of our lives. Buy it. Enjoy it. I DID. Wishing you Best Viewing from my Throne, QUEENSOPHIE
