Synopsis
William Kamkwamba, a young man from Malawi, shares the remarkable story of how he built a windmill from scratch, using abandoned tractor parts and half of a bicycle, and successfully generated electricity and running water for his family. Born into abject poverty in one of the least developed countries on the planet, William was always intrigued by science and electricity, but the harsh conditions of his childhood eventually forced him to leave school to work on the family farm. With no teachers to guide him, William began using junk parts to cobble together a windmill based on a few pictures he found in outdated science textbooks, much to the amusement of his neighbors, who called him "misala," or crazy. But when William rigged his rickety contraption to an electric circuit and lit up his house, the derisive comments quickly turned into celebratory shouts. Much like his homemade windmill, William's terrific ingenuity is now the driving force behind a global movement towards alternative energy sources.
