Laura Childs' BOUND FOR MURDER: A Scrapbooking Mystery

What's not to love about a mystery that includes scrapbooking and crafting tips, recipes, and an eBay reference? Sweetmomma Pam is sort of a peripheral character in Laura Childs' Scrapbooking Mysteries, being sidekick "Ava's granny, a feisty old gal who was addicted to infomercials and the shopping channels. Last they'd heard, Sweetmomma Pam had discovered eBay." It sounds like she's a natural-born eBayer!

Sweetmomma Pam is also the source of one of the delicious recipes that follow this delightfully cozy whodunit. But first, let's talk about the storyline: Scrapbooking store owner Carmela Bertrand has just put the finishing touches on custom place cards for a friend's wedding when she finds the groom with a butcher knife protruding from his body.

Needless to say, this puts a real damper on the festivities. But rather than immediately clearing the crime scene, Carmela takes it upon herself to investigate, telling her employee (the bride's cousin) the next day, "We should probably see how the police investigation proceeds before we interfere too much. See what they come up with." Gee, ya think?

But cozies would go nowhere if it weren't for their heroines' penchant for playing Nancy Drew, and then where would we be? And snarkiness aside, "Bound For Murder" is an excellent read. The characters are well drawn and true to life, while the author has a nifty way of evoking a genuine New Orleans atmosphere. The plot is nicely woven, and the identity of the murderer is a real surprise.

If you are a scrapbooking fan or just generally crafty, you will love the tips and ideas given at the end of the book. And the recipes sound delicious without being overly complicated. If you like "Bound For Murder", you'll want to check out the rest of the Scrapbooking Mysteries. (My favorite title is of her newest book, "Death Swatch".) Laura Childs also is the author of the Tea Shop Mysteries, which are likewise reliably entertaining.

Just like her tea shop mysteries, her scrapbooking mysteries are fabulous!

Carmela Bertrand has the honor of creating some custom place cards for a friend's pre-wedding party when she makes a shocking discovery....the groom has a butcher knife sticking out of his body! The heartbroken bride asks Carmella to look into the case and there is no way she can say no. Unfortunately, Carmella learns that the groom had a secret past and now she must help her friend pick up the pieces of her life while trying to wrap up this murder mystery.
Ms. Child's mysteries put the reader right in the city....you travel the streets with her by vivid descriptions. A two thumbs up on this author!
