Synopsis A novel that takes place in the Napoleonic era, recalling Tolstoy but telling a story of ethnic conflict that is eerily relevant to life in Bosnia today. Andric examines the results of long centuries of oppression which have formed the Bosnian character to display heroism, nobility, and greatness side by side with cruelty, suffering, and moral coarseness. This novel is the second book in Andric's Bosnian trilogy, with "The Bridge on the Drina" and "The Woman from Sarajevo" representing the first and third books, all published in 1945.
