Album Notes
Smoking Popes: Josh Caterer (guitar, vocals); Eli Caterer (guitar); Matt Caterer (bass); Mike Felumlee (drums).
Additional personnel: Lynette White (background vocals).
Recorded at Solid Sound Studios, Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
This Illinois band's music has been frequently described as pop-punk, but with singer Josh Caterer's rather Morrissey-esque croon delivering unabashedly romantic lyrics (Moz himself is said to be a fan of the band), the energetic rush of the guitars and drums is subverted into something much more singular. BORN TO QUIT, the band's second album, is often regarded as their best, and the hooky "Need You Around" is certainly one of their finest moments. Throughout the album, the Smoking Popes' winning match of rock power and melodic fluidity remains classy and satisfying.

Editorial Reviews
...Buzzcock-y guitar pop...
Melody Maker (03/09/1996)

8 (out of 10) - ...Smoking Popes like tunes, they just like grafting them onto garage guitars....This, like all good pop music, is timeless stuff....the Popes' shameless romanticism set to a musical agenda shared with...Sugar or Foo Fighters, is a real winner...
NME (03/02/1996)

...Smoking Popes steam out of Illinois....all keen tunes and sorta-sexy lyrics, a squidgy first album Squeeze without the Mock Cockney trousers...
Alternative Press (10/01/1995)

3 Stars - Good - ...The Popes...revel in the pop verities: well-crafted melodies, danceable tempos and lovelorn lyrics. BORN TO QUIT connects the romantic values of '50s doo-wop and easy-listening records with the amplified aggression of the '80s...
Rolling Stone (08/24/1995)
