Boomerang! (DVD, 2008, Pan and Scan; Sensormatic)

"Boomerang!" is part of Fox's Film Noir series, but it feels much more like a grandfather to all the "Law & Order" and "CSI" crime shows. Dana Andrews has little to do until the big courtroom climax and then with amazing finesse, he reels off some major exposition. It all hinges on his presentation and he nails it. Even director Elia Kazan who worried about Andrews' restrained acting style was impressed by the actor's ability to memorize pages and pages of dialogue (this is revealed in the audio commentary). "Boomerang!" isn't a major accomplishment for Kazan like "East of Eden" or "On the Waterfront", but it's sturdy and compelling drama nonetheless. For Dana Andrews, it's a stand-up role (as an uncorruptible attorney) and shows that he had range. He wasn't just the tough detective from "Laura" or the struggling war veteran from "The Best Years of Our Lives".

I bought this for a friend as he has been trying to find a copy of this movie. I got to watch it before him and as soon as I watched the film I realized it was one I had see years ago and couldn't remember the title. A nice treat. Acting and story are great. A nice film noir classic

"Boomerang" is an effectively done drama with nicely drawn characters and a clear sense of time and place. It is based on a true story of the murder of a priest and the quick apprehension of a suspect who may or may not be the real killer, though a confession was made by him under pressure. Though the story is vivid and compelling, it is the different people involved in the case and what they have at stake depending on the outcome that makes this truly watchable. There is a naturalness to the characterizations as well as a desire to see how everything and everyone ends up that drives the story. Though not emotionally involving, which may be the main thing lacking, it is well-paced and rarely drags. My interest in this movie is based on it being one of the Fox Film Noir series. I find this to be only marginally noir, even though it is categorized as one. However I do recommend it as a fine dramatic film and a good example of some early work by one of the great filmmakers.

When I first saw this movie back in the '90's on AMC,I really enjoyed it.I bought it because it reminds me of a bygone era in Hollywood,and Dana Andrews is one of my favorite actors from that period.The story is very well written and the acting is outstanding.Dana Andrews shines as the D.A. looking for the real murderer of the priest in this Fox film noir.The signs are all there and it is up to him to find the real killer dispite the towns people convinced the killer is already in jail.Evidence begins to fall in place and the answer is a suspense of unbelieveable proportions.Jane Wyatt is masterful as the supportive wife of the D.A.This would make a great addition to your film noir collection along side Laura,Where the side walk ends,the Maltese Falcon and the Big Sleep.

SUCH a rare DVD (it was pulled before it was officially released, so only several hundred copies made it into the public), and as it turns out, such a great movie, too! Thank you SO much for making this happen. I'm quite happy with this purchase.

I felt grateful to be able to purchase this withdrawn title, which may never be rereleased. The seller made more than one copy available of this terrific movie.
