Boom! by Tom Brokaw (2007)

Synopsis
Noted broadcast journalist Tom Brokaw, who was there, revisits the turbulent 1960s through incisive interviews with others who were there (and who survived), to provide a fresh account of a period of history that without any doubt changed America and Americans. Brokaw frames his account of the political and popular culture of the time with his own life story. And though he was not a member of the counterculture, his incisive interviews with the likes of Mark Rudd, Gloria Steinem, Berry Gordy and James Taylor, among others, are fleshed out by generous and incisive context from Brokaw's present perspective. As he did in his bestselling THE GREATEST GENERATION, Brokaw tells the story of an era through the personal lives of its participants, as he follows the Ed Murrow model using a timely "you are there" style.

Industry Reviews
"[Tom Brokaw] approaches this magnum opus with warmth, curiosity and conviction, the same attributes that worked so well for his GREATEST GENERATION. And he will succeed in prompting readers to step back and do some soul searching. BOOM is as interesting for the effects it can catalyze as for those it actually describes....On the page, as he is on the screen, Mr. Brokaw is a canny, perceptive interviewer with an honest interest in what other people have to say."

"[U]ltimately, [BOOM!] is about personalities, and that is its charm--the chance to meet so many interesting people."

      BOOM!

I bought this book not sure if I would find it interesting reading for someone who 'came of age' in the 60's. I am so glad I bought it - it brought back so many memories of my years at the U of Mich and all the changes, social and political, that were going on during that time. Anyone wanting to take a trip back to the 60's through the eyes of people who were involved either through their social protests, their music, or the opportunities they found, should read this book. It's simply wonderful.

Very good audio CD. It probably would have taken me a while to read the book as it sometimes dragged on (I am not a product of the baby boom as I was born in the mid 60's), but the audio made it much more interesting. I listened to the entire thing on a long trip.
