Publisher's Note Illus. in full color. Mulligan is a proud bookstore cat who takes his job very seriously. He keeps an eye on the store, greets the customers, even helps them pick out books. But when two unexpected, intruding birds cross his way, Mulligan cannot resist his feline instincts.
Industry Reviews Gr 1-2 Mulligan is a big gray cat that lives and works in a bookstore. He has numerous ``jobs'' doorman (he sprawls on the doormat), mouse catcher (he plays with a toy mouse), watchcat (he regularly makes himself at home in the window to watch those passing by), and babysitter (children find him a huggable companion). On the day of a puppet show put on by a pirate accompanied by a stuffed parrot, Mulligan spots a pigeon outside. As a customer enters the store, the pigeon follows, and a predictable chase ensues. The spirited watercolors realistically portray the action and for the most part help youngsters comprehend the text. A lively story that will appeal to more confident emerging readers.
