Album Notes Half Japanese includes: Jad Fair (vocals). Recorded at Studio Des Usines, Neuchatel, Switzerland. After nearly two decades of recording, Half Japanese released this 20 song 1997 album featuring the stable '90s line-up of Jad Fair, John Sluggett and Gilles Rieder, along with a couple guest guitarists. All of Jad's usual themes are here, from the mock-horror of "Monkey Hand" and the appearance of Frankenstein in "Sometimes" to the wide-eyed romanticism of "A Night Like This," "Song Of Joy," and "Brand New Sky." There are also some furious grooves, including the aforementioned "Sometimes" (positively, head-spinningly hypnotic, and guitarist Sluggett takes a turn on the piano which will stop you in your tracks) and "Zombie Eye" (which would be a good song to play anyone who thinks Half Japanese is overly primitive and noisy). The sound quality is sharp, capturing the live feeling of Jad and the band, while also heightening the definition of each instrument.
Editorial Reviews Jad Fair is in fine form on this album....the disc includes any number of real songs that could become staples of the Hlf Jap canon....Song Of Joy may in fact be one of the most impassioned love songs ever... Option (07/01/1997)
