Bondage of the Mind

While written primarily from a Jewish perspective this book provides solid evidence that freedom of thought is not found in traditional literal interpretations of Religious texts, but is found rather in an honest search for truth.
Some of the examples the author cites are obvious - but are rarely reported. When truth and faith conflict, we have been conditioned by religion to see blind faith as superior. The author demolishes the walls that Fundamentalist Religion has built up around this misdirected faith. Faith in a lie or a misrepresentation of facts is not faith in God. To find God we need to find truth first.
The author makes the case that all religions are caught up in this same problem. They are defending the myths of the past as if they were objective truth while at the same time they denounce factual truth because it does not match their preconcieved cosmologies.
Any believer who acknowledges that there is a God and who believes that this God is good and does not condone lies should read this book.
