Album Notes A collection of tracks originally recorded for the Indian "Bollywood" film industry in the '70s, and composed by the soundtrack team of Kalyani, Anandji. Includes liner notes by Rob Weisberg and Adrian Milan. BOMBAY THE HARD WAY contains 15 selections from early '70s Indian crime thrillers written and orchestrated by noted soundtrack composers Anandji and Kalyanji Shah. The brothers Shah combine Indian instrumentation and western soundtracks in a way that twists both styles slightly off-kilter. The results are fascinating and delightful, from the atmospheric sonic landscapes of "Bombay 405 Miles" to the sweeping grandeur of "Uptown Bollywood Nights." The short pieces, given somewhat misleading titles like "Punjabis, Pimps and Players" or "Fists of Curry," are interspersed with uncredited film dialogue fragments. Purists may balk at the sometimes intrusive extra drum and sitar tracks added by the album's producers, but they do help hold the album together as a whole. BOMBAY THE HARD WAY is an excellent introduction to the surprising world of Indian film soundtracks.
