What could the poet, who has been called the spokesman of his generation, possibly have to offer on a third greatest-hits compilation?
Quite a lot, and by listening to these selections you realize the depth of Bob Dylan's musical inventory. This eclectic, quirky collection provides his best literate epics ("Brownsville," written with Sam Shepard), enigmatic gems ("Tangled Up In Blue" from the brilliant BLOOD ON THE TRACKS), masterful gospel classics (STREET LEGAL's "Changing Of The Guard"), effective political narratives ("Hurricane") and timeless pop classics ("Forever Young" and "Knockin' On Heaven's Door"). For the most part, these rock, folk, gospel and blues cuts are selected from less celebrated albums like OH MERCY, DOWN IN THE GROOVE and KNOCKED OUT LOADED. They should serve as entreaties to return to those overlooked treasures.
With all this album's pedigree, the unlikely show-stopper is the previously unreleased "Dignity"--it causes one to pause and note the continuing awesomeness of Dylan's craft and limitless lyrical talent. This album serves as a lesson to all aspiring singer-songwriters. GREATEST HITS, VOLUME 3, indeed--from an artist whose every song is complex perfection.

Fine Overview Of Dylan's 70s And 80s Output.

    Pros:
    Strong selections.

    Cons:
Would have liked more from Blood On The Tracks.

I like Bob Dylan to a point. I make that statement as a means of explaining where my opinion lies on the man and his music. I like his music and I admire his talent. But I'm not a fanatic. In other words, I don't need to own every single thing he ever released. I do own a few of his classic albums (Highway 61 Revisited, Blood On The Tracks) and there are several songs of his that I would put on any "Best songs of all time" list. A few of these are on this 14 song compilation, which spans Dylan's 70s, 80s and early 90s output (90s output up until his 1997 "Time Out of Mind"). Some hardcore...

Essential Dylan--"Dignity" is Worth The $12 Alone
    Review created: 05/27/00

    Pros:
    Great Album

    Cons:
Some tracks are questionable as to "hit" status

The third installment in Bob Dylan's greatest hits collection is just as memorable as it's predecessors. It contains Dylan's classics from the middle of Dylan's career. Beginning with the always memorable "Tangled up in Blue," "Greatest Hits Volume Three" gets off to a heart pounding ride of intricate lyricism harmonizing with brilliant musicianship, until the final notes of the album's last track, "Knockin' of Heaven's Door." For die-hard Dylan fans who already own all of Dylan's official releases Volume Three offers new incentive through the prophetic "Dignity." The previously...
