Album Notes Personnel include: Bob Dylan (vocals, guitar, harmonica); Happy Traum (guitar, banjo, bass instrument, background vocals); Leon Russell (keyboards). The most casual Dylan fan--listeners who just want a copy of "Blowin' in the Wind" and "Mr. Tambourine Man" around the house--should stick with GREATEST HITS. VOL. 2, however, is arguably the superior collection. For starters, it is a double album (the CD packs two-LPs' worth of material onto a single disc). Secondly, it offers a more thoroughgoing assessment of his dazzling range of styles in the first near-decade, spanning his protest songs ("A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall"), his acerbic, mid-'60s rock ("Maggie's Farm"), and his mellow, romantic approach in the early '70s ("Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You"). Dylan's career is often referred to in terms of stages, and each of those stages is represented beautifully. The folkie phase circa FREEWHEELING BOB DYLAN ("Don't Think Twice, It's All right"), his acoustic visionary phase ("It's All Over Now, Baby Blue"), the oblique, mercurial BLONDE ON BLONDE phase ("Stuck Inside A Mobile With the Memphis Blues Again"), his allegorical, living-in-Woodstock-with-a-beard phase ("All Along the Watchtower"), and his country phase ("Lay Lady Lay") are all here. Even better, VOL. 2 includes a smattering of rarities, including live versions of songs and alternate takes of BASEMENT TAPES material. As an introduction and an overview of Dylan's music, it is hard to go wrong with this set. Editorial Reviews Dirty Linen (10/01/1999) | Find errors in the product description? Reviews Review created: 04/06/08 by: Why you bought it and What you like most about it - more than greatest hits vol. 1 or greatest hits vol. 3, this collection really represents both a set of popular hits and his style from different period. What you dislike about it - I haven't found it yet. Review ID: 10000000006527403 Was this review helpful? Report this review I bought this 2-CD set for one song: "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue." If you like Dylan you probably already have most of these songs. I had that song by Marianne Faithful (Likewise great) and Noel Harrison (not bad but it's the song, not the singer). Dylan is obviously fantastic on his own song and the harmonica part will blow you away if you have never heard it before. Not as good as the live version he did on "Soundstage" but I don't think that is available on CD. Review ID: 10000000005149761 Was this review helpful? This was the first Dylan album I ever owned, and one of the first records I ever bought with my own money. I am not sure why I popped for this one instead of "Greatest Hits-- Volume 1", which featured the more familiar songs, but I am glad I did. Of course, these aren't "hits" in any conventional way. I doubt that most were ever singles, and probably most didn't get a great deal of air play, even back then, when FM radio was still a creative medium. In fact, a.
