Synopsis John Fahey was a brilliant solo instrumental guitarist whose reputation for eccentricity is confirmed in this, his first collection of short stories. Much as his extended musical improvisations--an amalgam of jazz, folk, and international influences--expand into unexpected territory, so do these dozen vignettes. Subjects range from Fahey's discovery of a musical universe beyond the one featured on his local Maryland radio station (a tale that also incorporates an offbeat critique of suburban family life), to a magical depiction of love. Fahey's writing is as angular and unexpected as his music, and often as lyrical. Brimming with invention and an acerbic wit, these imaginative semi-autobiographical stories are the closest thing to an account of the early years of this influential musician, who died in 2001.
