Album Notes Available as part of BLUE NOTE 50TH ANNIVERSARY COLLECTION boxed set. Why there are no tracks by Lee Morgan, Hank Mobley, or Sonny Clark here is quite a mystery, considering that all three cut some of the defining sessions of the era. That said, this edition of the Blue Note 50th Anniversary box still packs it in with sides by Wayne Shorter ("Speak No Evil"), Art Blakey ("Mosaic"), Dexter Gordon ("Cheesecake"), and Herbie Hancock ("Maiden Voyage"). And, speaking of a message, Coltrane is tapped for the title cut from his only Blue Note date, Blue Train, while fellow jazz deity Miles Davis makes a sort of cameo as a guest on Cannonball Adderley's "Autumn Leaves." Topped off by more gold from Jackie McLean and Bobby Hutcherson, this sampler makes for some prime hard bop listening. ~ Stephen Cook
