I had read the other 19 in the Aubrey/Maturin series, this one was excellent, but steven mooning over christine wood was sometimes too much, the use of narration of details through letters to her was fine but overdone, still i loved the book and would recommend it to all lovers of things nautical!

Last book in the grand series

This is the last full, complete Aubrey-Maturin novel by Patrick O'Brian, number 20. There is a #21 but it is incomplete and not representative of the canon. In a sense this is not a review of this particular book but rather of all of them, because they all hang together constituting one gargantuan novel!

With O'Brian, you either get it or you don't. Not everyone does because O'Brian is very subtle and unconventional. Some have said that he wrote to please himself. This makes some sense because after you have read a few of these books, you begin to realize that O'Brian is not going anywhere in a hurry, he is taking his time because the process is the thing not the destination. And he can be hard to follow until you get used to his writing style. Also his use of nautical terms is rife and you do have to take your time to understand what those odd words refer to.

But if you can do all those things you are in for a rare treat!
