I actually had this game back when it was initially released, but a guest sat it on a few days afterward (!) and I finally decided to replace it recently. Anyway, Blowout is a basic side-scrolling arcade style shooter that plays like a combination of DOOM and Contra, although it's not quite the classic those games were. In a nutshell, you're a beefy space marine type that needs to clear out an alien-infested space station, finding keys, clues and big, mean bosses along the way.
The ten stages are quite large, offering up hidden rooms, elevators, tons of heavy weaponry and a few other surprises. While the action is straightforward, the AI is generally fierce enough to give those expecting an easy time of it a few "what the heck just happened" moments if one rushes into battle hastily. There are a couple of difficulty settings that allow players of all skill levels to jump in and get to it. However, the game has an unusual dual stick control scheme that may take some players a bit of getting used to. You can choose from a few different control options and fortunately, the first stage starts out slowly, giving you time to get used to your chosen layout.
The game has solid visuals and lighting courtesy of developer Terminal Reality's proprietary Terminal Engine (the same one used for the BloodRayne games). Using 3D characters and environments in a 2D-style side-scroller makes for a great-looking game overall, although there is some repetition to the level textures and layouts. There's a nicely done (albeit minimalist) score, weapons and explosions sound great and overall, the game does what it does well enough through its ten lengthy stages.
As for caveats, there's no co-op or online play at all, but I didn't mind this one bit. The best things about Blowout (beside the budget price point) are its overall presentation and relentless action. If you're looking for something to keep that mindless, trigger-happy side of your psyche sated, give it a shot.
