Nice Brain Candy

If you're looking for a brilliant Hemingway-like read, none of the Dresden books are the ticket. But if you're looking for some fun escapism, well, these are the books for you. The first four are the best of the series, at least so far. Blood Rites goes deeper into the relationship between Harry, a wizard P.I., and Thomas, a run-of-the-mill White Court vampire. The story is interesting enough--I won't give it away--but the characterization is total barf. It's as if the author forgot that Harry and Thomas are two different people. Occasionally, even Murphy, a cop with Special Investigations who knows all about Harry, has that one-liner schtick thing going on. I expect that from Harry. That's why I read the books. Harry is a big goofy wizard. I even expect that from Thomas, a little bit, but not Murphy. I have a feeling that Butcher is feeling the push to get out a book every few months and considering he has another fantasy series, well, I guess it's the Dresden Files that begins to suffer. It's an ok read, just not the page-turner I came to expect from Butcher.
