Movie Description
Anthony Quinn and Sophia Loren star in this tale of bittersweet romance directed by the legendary Martin Ritt. Rose Bianco (Loren) helped her late husband become involved in crime so she could live lavishly; after his death, she is beset with both grief and guilt. Making matters worse, her teenage son seems to be following in his father's criminal footsteps when he is convicted of theft and sentenced to reform school. Then one day Rose meets Frank Valente (Quinn), a kindhearted widower with a headstrong child of his own. Frank soon falls in love with Rose, but daughter Mary (Ina Balin) vehemently opposes her father's courtship of this woman with a checkered past. As Frank and Rose's growing affections complicate the lives of both their children, THE BLACK ORCHID becomes a touching exploration of the sometimes delicate balance between familial and personal happiness.

Sophia Loren plays the widow(Rose Bianco) of a murdered gangster in this 1959 film. She is trying to put her life back together again by doing sewing for people. Loren's son is following in his father's footsteps and this causes for the first part of the melodrama......the second being that Anthony Quinn(Frank Valente) comes into her life and tries to become a part of it, but Quinn's grown daughter (Ina Balin) lives with her father and has taken care of him since her mother died and resents Loren coming between them. Quinn wants to marry Loren but his daughter is dead set against it and makes their lives miserable until Sophia figures out a way to open her heart so they can all be a family.
Loren is wonderful & beautiful (as always) in the part of Rose. She has the ability to set fire to any acting job she is given. Quinn is also good, but a little bumbling here and there, but maybe that was what was called for. Ina Balin was perfect as the jealous daughter. I think the story content of trying to make families come together as one is something that is happening all the time. It isn't always easy but some people find a way.
