Synopsis
As in his previous novel, SAFELIGHT, Shannon Burke uses his real-life experiences as an ambulance driver and emergency medical technician in New York City as material for a brilliant and frequently brutal novelistic investigation of death and violence and what they can do to the minds of those who see them every day. The novel's protagonist, Ollie Cross, takes a job as a paramedic after he fails to get into medical school, and the novel tracks his transformation from a squeamish by-the-numbers ambulance rookie into the cynical and numb man who doesn't flinch as he watches thousands of black flies around a rotting corpse. Selected by the New York Times Book Review as a Notable Book of 2008.

Publisher's Note
Becoming increasingly jaded in his first year as an inner-city paramedic, Ollie Cross makes a morally challenging decision to allow a brain-damaged and HIV-positive newborn to die, a choice that leads to the termination and suicide of his partner. Original.

Industry Reviews
"Gunshot wounds, crack pipes and rotting corpses abound in this raw and fascinating novel about Harlem paramedics in the mid-1990s....Burke is a poet of trauma." (starred review)
(03/31/2008)

"It's a slim, adrenaline-boosting read, but Burke's sentences are as elegantly precise as his images are visceral...and the book lingers long after the narrative's sped past." (Best of 2008 finalist)
(02/01/2009)

"Reading this arresting, confrontational book is like reading DISPATCHES, Michael Herr's indelible account of his years as a reporter in Vietnam....Be warned: as in DISPATCHES many of the most vivid scenes in BLACK FLIES make for harrowing reading. Visceral and mercilessly detailed, they are not included for sensational purposes--not as an E.R. version of 'war porn.' Instead, Burke uses them as shock treatment for the conscience."
