| Movie Description Though it was only a mild success upon its release in 1974, the original BLACK CHRISTMAS (directed by Bob Clark, who would go on to direct A CHRISTMAS STORY in 1984) has become a cult favorite among horror buffs since the dawn of the home-video era. An early example of the "body count" genre, the film also predates WHEN A STRANGER CALLS (1979) in its use of a killer making threatening phone calls that originate within his potential victims' own house. In this remake, writer/director Glen Morgan takes the basics of Roy Moore's screenplay for the original to create an elaborate and almost comically disturbing back story for Billy, the killer who previously remained a mystery. A handful of sorority girls remain at the house after the school shuts down for Christmas break. An ominous snowstorm blows in, isolating them. At the same time, a killer--who in this version escapes from a mental institution to return to his former family home--breaks into the attic and begins making terrifying phone calls to the girls (led by Kate Cassidy, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Lacey Chabert) before killing them off one by one. SCTV veteran Andrea Martin, who portrayed a victim in the original, returns as Ms. Mac, the house mother. Stylistically, Moore's remake avoids casting the film in the ironic post-SCREAM or streamlined, gore-free Japanese-horror-inspired fright films of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Instead he makes BLACK CHRISTMAS in the style of a wet and red '80s slasher film. The plentiful blood and guts will please fans of that era, as will tributes to the HALLOWEEN films. This, along with a soundtrack that eschews holiday standards in favor of modern pop music, plus a dim lighting scheme that relies heavily on colored Christmas bulbs, combine to create an atmosphere of holiday dread in this fun update of what has become a horror classic.

Top Reviews Review created: 03/21/07(updated 03/21/07) by: 8 of 11 people found this review helpful. "Black Christmas" (UNRATED) isn't just a remake of the 1974 Cult Classic., it's a deliriously entertaining love letter to the entire genre of 70's and 80's slasher films. With its highly creative murder sequences and twisted sense of humor, it plays not like a slasher movie, but as aging fans remember them through the forgiving haze of nostalgia. It's like "Prom Night" or "My Bloody Valentine" reimagined by filmmakers of genuine wit and style. Writer-director Morgan and producer James Wong have collaborated on a number of other satisfying horror films, including two of the "Final Destination" pictures and the grossly-underappreciated outstanding "Willard" remake. If "Final Destination" was an inventive variation on the "dead teenager" formula pioneered by "Friday the 13th", "Black Christmas" is to the whole genre of slasher films what "Kill Bill" was to 70's Grindhouse Flicks — a pastiche that is smarter and funnier than the movies it's ripping off. Like the original film, "Black Christmas" follows a group of sorority sisters still at school just before Christmas as they are picked off one by one by a killer who terrorizes them with creepy prank calls. (Foonote "SCREAM") - A few iconic images aside, this "Black Christmas" is quite different in tone from the original; where the 1974 film was subtly unsettling, the new movie goes for the throat right from the garish prologue and never lets up. It's profane, disgusting and morally repellent — and in the case of a movie like this, those are all big compliments. Morgan's screenplay delivers everything a horror fan could want: The murders are the most uniquely disgusting since "Happy Birthday to Me", the inevitable backstory that impacts the present-day murders is ingeniously warped, and the cast is made up of attractive but vapid young women whose demises are satisfying and disturbing in equal measure. By every possible criterion, the remake is a superior film — it's more efficiently paced and much more stylish. It's the perfect kind of remake in that it pays tribute to the original (both with a number of clever visual quotations and in the casting of original cast member Andrea Martin in a key role), while improving upon it with new ideas and images. In the best slasher movie tradition, "Black Christmas" is patently absurd when it comes to the physical limitations (or lack thereof) of its killer, but the filmmakers' audacity in creating a villain who can do the impossible is part of the fun. Criticizing the lack of reality in a picture like this is like complaining about the lack of belly laughs in "Children of Men". A great slasher movie is defined by two things: energy and a deranged sensibility, and "Black Christmas" contains both attributes in abundance. The widescreen cinematography is flat-out gorgeous., and more than worthy of high recognition !! And Morgan's gleeful desire to shock the audience both with the gore and the perverse backstory is delightfully infectious., (i.e. a great holiday film wherein a psychopathic serial killer uses milk to wash down Christmas Cookies made of human flesh). This season, if it's between Will Smith as a homeless guy who's an expert with a Rubik's Cube vs a wild bunch of hot, sexy sorority sisters being stalked by a deeply disturbed psycho, I'll take the latter. SEE THIS !! Well Recommended !! Cannot Fail You As A Horror Fan !! ENJOY !! Review ID: 10000000003226067 Was this review helpful? Report this review |
