"Black Christmas" (UNRATED) isn't just a remake of the 1974 Cult Classic., it's a deliriously entertaining love letter to the entire genre of 70's and 80's slasher films. With its highly creative murder sequences and twisted sense of humor, it plays not like a slasher movie, but as aging fans remember them through the forgiving haze of nostalgia.
It's like "Prom Night" or "My Bloody Valentine" reimagined by filmmakers of genuine wit and style. Writer-director Morgan and producer James Wong have collaborated on a number of other satisfying horror films, including two of the "Final Destination" pictures and the grossly-underappreciated outstanding "Willard" remake. If "Final Destination" was an inventive variation on the "dead teenager" formula pioneered by "Friday the 13th", "Black Christmas" is to the whole genre of slasher films what "Kill Bill" was to 70's Grindhouse Flicks — a pastiche that is smarter and funnier than the movies it's ripping off.
Like the original film, "Black Christmas" follows a group of sorority sisters still at school just before Christmas as they are picked off one by one by a killer who terrorizes them with creepy prank calls. (Foonote "SCREAM") - A few iconic images aside, this "Black Christmas" is quite different in tone from the original; where the 1974 film was subtly unsettling, the new movie goes for the throat right from the garish prologue and never lets up. It's profane, disgusting and morally repellent — and in the case of a movie like this, those are all big compliments. Morgan's screenplay delivers everything a horror fan could want: The murders are the most uniquely disgusting since "Happy Birthday to Me", the inevitable backstory that impacts the present-day murders is ingeniously warped, and the cast is made up of attractive but vapid young women whose demises are satisfying and disturbing in equal measure.
By every possible criterion, the remake is a superior film — it's more efficiently paced and much more stylish. It's the perfect kind of remake in that it pays tribute to the original (both with a number of clever visual quotations and in the casting of original cast member Andrea Martin in a key role), while improving upon it with new ideas and images.
In the best slasher movie tradition, "Black Christmas" is patently absurd when it comes to the physical limitations (or lack thereof) of its killer, but the filmmakers' audacity in creating a villain who can do the impossible is part of the fun. Criticizing the lack of reality in a picture like this is like complaining about the lack of belly laughs in "Children of Men". A great slasher movie is defined by two things: energy and a deranged sensibility, and "Black Christmas" contains both attributes in abundance. The widescreen cinematography is flat-out gorgeous., and more than worthy of high recognition !! And Morgan's gleeful desire to shock the audience both with the gore and the perverse backstory is delightfully infectious., (i.e. a great holiday film wherein a psychopathic serial killer uses milk to wash down Christmas Cookies made of human flesh).
This season, if it's between Will Smith as a homeless guy who's an expert with a Rubik's Cube vs a wild bunch of hot, sexy sorority sisters being stalked by a deeply disturbed psycho, I'll take the latter.
SEE THIS !! Well Recommended !! Cannot Fail You As A Horror Fan !! ENJOY !!

A very strange film to review..............

This movie is just about neutral for me because the bad and the good things about this movie are about the same. It starts off really boring and cheesy for me because the killing scenes are so fake and look like the special effects are still from the 70's, if the killing scenes were better it would have made the show more enjoyable. Then there are the weird scenes dealing with mother-son sex, which makes it very weird to watch and makes me question why I'm watching this, but I guess that's just how the story goes. After about half the movie, then it gets exciting and actually makes me want to finish the film. Overall only half of the film is good, and I would rent it before you buy it since everyone like different horror, this may be the one for you, but for me personally it was a one time show.....

  A SO-SO Christmas Killer Movie
Review created: 04/02/07

Here is why this movie sucked! Lame girls in the sorority house, these characters were so poorly written and acted, I just wanted to see them all die. They were shallow, vapid, cel phone, blackberry addicted mindlesss freaks of nature with perfect teeth, there was no depth to these characters at all. The story was choppy in its telling, and there was far too much information given, and a rediculous, almost humorous backstory regarding the killer which robbed the movie of any sense of dread or fear. Mystery of the unknown is what makes a good horror movie, when you over explain why something is frightening it is no longer frightening. I actually yawned, I shut my eyes a few times, and people in the audience laughed when I think we were supposed to be terrified. The killer was a joke, the deaths while although bloody were un-original and lame. The snow that was falling all around them at times had the appearance of oatmeal. There were sex scenes that were so oddly placed and hard to watch, this was truly a blasphemy of a horror movie, it did not blaspheme Christmas, but it blasphemed the name of horror films. It blasphemed it to death. It was unscary, unsastisfying, un-anything, just BLA.... My advice would be don't pay to see this in the theater, rent it if you absolutely must see it. But, you've been warned!

Having not seen the original yet, I do not have a basis for comparison, but I have to say this movie sucked out loud. Three words- cliche, cliche, cliche, this movie was overwhelmingly predictable from start to overly predictable finish. If I could, I would ask blockbuster for my $4.00 back, it was that bad.The only saving graces of this movie was hot girls and lots of gore. Something that took away alot from the film was the scriptwriter trying to make the girls seem even snobbier by using the "F" word at every opportunity, even if it makes no sense at all. I love profanity as much as the next guy, but it sounded a little fakey coming from the party of five girl and harriet the spy...just doesnt work for me. Save your money, your time, and possibly even a few brain cells.

Black Christmas Remake Great Slasher Film
Review created: 04/04/07

This movie is one of the better ones ive seen in a while. It sets a completly different tone than other horror films in that the whole setting is in a kind of cheery christmas vibe. The movie starts out with a bang and keeps you wondering whos next and what is going to happen to them. The only negative things i can say about this movie is that they used the same killing method way to much, they could have came up with some different ways to kill some of the girls off,and some of the gory scenes were kind of fake. But over all it was a great movie and i would tell everybody to see this movie. If your not sure about weather you will like it then rent it by all means, you might be surprised like i was.

Summary
Full Synopsis:
A few innocent women experience a nightmare before Christmas in this bloody thriller. Billy Lenz, a severely maladjusted child, finally snaps under years of brutal treatment by his family, killing and eating them in an explosion of violence on Christmas Eve. For years, the Lenz house stands vacant, but in time it's purchased and renovated as the new home for a college sorority. A few days before Christmas, a handful of sorority sisters -- Dana (Lacey Chabert), Melissa (Michelle Trachtenberg), Kelli (Katie Cassidy), and Heather (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) -- are enjoying a quiet evening with their house mother, Barbara MacHenry (Andrea Martin), exchanging gifts and swapping stories before heading home for holiday break. While Barbara remembers the story of Billy's crimes, the atmosphere is peaceful until the young women receive the first in a series of disturbing telephone calls. Before long, they learn that Billy has escaped after years in a mental institution, and has come back to the house where he grew up to once again spill blood for the Christmas season. Black Christmas is a remake of the 1974 horror film of the same name by director Bob Clark, who later made a less-threatening film about the Yuletide season, A Christmas Story; Andrea Martin, who plays the house mother, also appeared in the 1974 film as one of the sorority girls. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

We were talking about horror movies at work one morning, and one co-worker mentioned Black Xmas. She said it was a good movie, so I bought it.

Well if you like cheese, its a good flick. As far as being scary enough to make you jump out of your seat---it's not.

The movie was in excellant condition and got it at a great price, but I had paid for insurance and $5.75 for shipping and didn't receive either. The postage on envelope showed shipping was only $1.36 and there was no insurance posted on the envelope. Some of your ebayers charge way too too much for shipping.

  Black Christmas [2006]

'Ho ho ho!'

Squellllch!!!

It's going to be a black Christmas at the Alpha Kappa Gamma sorority house, where a group of young women have been snowed in for the holidays ... for a crazed killer is having his Christmas dinner a few miles distant in the local mental institution ...

~ Years before, Billy Lenz was born with a liver disorder rendering his skin yellow. Loved by his father, hated by his mother, Billy is locked in the attic for most of his childhood. After being told by his mother that the Russians have shot down and killed Santa Claus, Billy witnesses her kill his father following a drunken argument. Billy is later seduced by his mother in the attic and a new baby comes along, a girl named Agnes ...

Billy becomes jealous of Agnes over time and one day pulls out one of her eyes, stabs his stepfather, and beats his mother to death with a rolling pin. His is quite rightly condemned insane and sentenced to the mental institution, after being found by the police eating human-mince pies. Agnes is sent to an orphanage ...

Hopefully you're still with me at this point ...

Back in 2006 the girls are still trapped in the sorority house and Billy is on the loose once more ... one-by-one they are picked off, their eyes missing like carrion left in the desert ... outside the blizzard rages and it's hours before help can arrive ~

I enjoyed this Yuletide Slasher Film, perhaps because it was set over Christmas. Like Halloween, there's something cool and mysterious about this holiday, even after one grows-up. It was certainly one of the better horror re-makes I've seen of late - the original was filmed in 1974 - though it may not pander to all tastes, especially those of a Christian orthodox. Although the plot isn't exactly original, the film is watchable throughout and there is a neat little twist at the end. The killing is extreme and graphic at times, and there are plenty of scenes that will keep you on the edge of your seat, even make you jump! The production design and picture quality are very good - this film doesn't have a low budget feel to it - and the acting is good all round. In a nutshell you need to take the content - in-breeding, serial killing, psychologically disturbed behavior - with a pinch of salt, like you would if you were watching an episode from Tales from the Crypt. Take this film too seriously and you too could be spending Christmas in the nuthouse ...

Wrap up warm and grab a sherry and mince pie, 'cause you're gonna have a very bloody Christmas with this slasher flick!

Contains scenes of violence and gore, sex and nudity, and strong language.

it was a good "Happy Valentine's Day" style movie. You know, the type to "curl up in front of the t.v. with your girl" with. Great addition to my collection though-- I like to have an assortment of movies-(EXCEPT pornos- none of them!)The only thing I didn't care for this particular dvd was it was advertised fullscreen but when I got it it was widescreen. I consider widescreen to be a waste of MY money.

SOME THINGS ARE BETTER LEFT ALONE!
Review created: 06/25/07
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I AM RATING THIS FILM BELOW AVERAGE DUE TO POOR STORY LINES,AND BELOW AVERAGE ACTING.

THIS FILM IS A REMAKE,AND AS MOST ARE THIS ONE WAS BETTER THE FIRST TIME.THEY ADDED THE GORE,BUT REMOVED THE STORY.MOST OF THE FILM IS IDLE,AND DARK.

THE DVD OFFERS NO PERKS FOR THE FILM.THE SHOTS ARE STILL VERY DARK(HARD TO SEE),AND THE TALKING IS LOW.

THE FILM WAS A DEAD GIVE AWAY FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T SEEN THE ORIGINAL(YOU CAN FIGURE THIS OUT).

THE ACTRESSES ARE OKAY AT BEST.YOU PRETTY MUCH WATCH THEM DISAPPEAR ONE BY ONE,AND FIND HOPE IN THAT BECAUSE AS THEY ARE DYING IT SHOWS THE FILMS PROGRESSION TOWARDS THE END.

NOT RECOMMENDED FOR ANYONE UNDER 15,AND EVEN THEN I WOULD SAY TO TRY AND FIND THE RATED AND EDITED VERSION,THOUGH THERE IS VERY LITTLE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO.

Good Storyline, Gore, & Girls Kick some A**
Review created: 03/01/09

I really liked Black X-Mas it was better then I thought it would be.
They keep to a good storyline with past & present so you know why people are getting whacked off.
At least you don't have a bunch of screaming stupid girls just running but kicking butt or just getting knocked off instead. Graphics are cool in the style of how people die or get murdered is different change of pace then most slasher type of films.
The ending was a surprising I would recommend it to any horror fan.
If I see it on I watch it again. I can't say that about many movies.
