Album Notes Backstreet Boys: Kevin Richardson, Howard "Howie D" Dorough, Alexander James "AJ" McLean, Brian "B-Rok" Littrell, Nick Carter. Additional personnel includes: Rodney Jerkins (various instruments); Tony Battaglia (acoustic guitar); Henrik Janson, Esbjorn Ohrwall, Peter Svensson, Max Martin, Michael Thompson (guitar); Per Magnusson (keyboards, programming); Nathan East, Thomas Lindberg (bass); Gustave Lund (percussion); Babyface (background vocals); Stockholm Session Strings. Producers include: Max Martin, Rami, Kristian Lundin, Rodney Jerkins, Babyface. Engineers include: Per Magnusson, David Kreuger, George Spatta. "Shape Of My Heart" was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal. The title of this album by the mega-platinum boy band might conceivably refer to the emotional state conveyed in some of the songs. While there are the requisite pledges of undying love ("Shining Star," "I Promise You"), several of the tunes on BLACK & BLUE deal with romantic turbulence, such as the opening track "The Call" and the vengeful "Get Another Boyfriend." While some of the songs are unsurprisingly provided by teen pop maestro Max Martin, several selections here were written by the Backstreet Boys themselves, proving conclusively that they have more creative input into their music than their naysayers might suggest. The production on BLACK & BLUE is a mix of pop, R&B, and mainstream hip-hop elements; the building blocks of any successful 2000 teen pop affair. And of course, its all topped off with the Boys' trademark sugar-sweet vocal harmonies. | Find errors in the product description? Submit a catalog update request now. | ||||||||||||
Review created: 07/04/02 by: beckish -- a member of Epinions Pros: Sweet, sentimental music Cons: None When my two older daughters both asked for the Backstreet Boys CD, Black and Blue I was willing to get a copy for both of them. I have always enjoyed Backstreet Boys music; the lyric are sweet, the music is pleasant to the ear, and I consider it wholesome teen music in the face of some of the stuff that is heard on the radio these days. Each and every one of the songs on this CD is a romantic, love song. The lyrics are complimented by the voices and the music, making listening to this CD pure pleasure. When I listen to it I am transported back in time to my own teenage years; the years of young love, of the emotional impact of falling in love for the first time, how you feel when things don't go quite right, and the way music always seem to fit. I guess I have to honestly say I am still that same way. Every so often a new song will come on the radio that will touch my heart and seem to speak directly to my soul with what is going on in my own life at the time. I have to admit that many of the songs sung by Backstreet Boys strike me that way. So who are the Backstreet Boys? You can't listen to popular radio without knowing the name. But who are the singers behind the name? The group Backstreet Boys is comprised of five members; Kevin Richardson, Howard "Howie D." Dorough, Alexander James "AJ" McLean, Brian "B-Rok" Littrell, and Nick Carter. I consider each and every one of these group members the kind of boy I would be happy for one of my daughters to date; granted, I am making that assumption based on the lyrics of their songs. Speaking of songs, let me tell you what is on this CD. The Call This is more than just a catchy tune. This song carries a deep message; don't make the mistake and treat the one you love badly because you might end up losing when you think you are winning. It is a story, a story of a boy who lets temptation lead him and ends up losing the woman he loves. A short recap; he calls his girlfriend and tells her he is going to be late, he goes out with the boys, meets a new girl, spends time with her; and his girlfriend finds out he has cheated on her. Hindsight is always 20/20! Listen baby I'm sorry Just wanna tell you don't worry I will be late don't stay up and wait for me I'll say again you're drying out my battery it's low So yu know we're goin to a place nearby I gotta go Now till it's done nothing's been won I can't take it back what's done is done One of her friends found out That she wasn't the only one And it eats me from inside, that she's not by my side Just because I made that call and lied. Shape of My Heart I totally love this song! Every time I listen to it I end up with tears in my eyes. Beautiful music, and touching lyrics. Sadness is beautiful Loneliness is tragical So help me I can't win this war Oh no Touch me now don't bother If every second it makes me weaker You can save me from the man I've become Looking back on the things I've done I was trying to be someone play my part kept you in the dark now let me show you the shape of my heart Get Another Boyfriend A good advice song, for a friend who is in a relationship that is not working. Listen, I mean it There's nothing that he's worthy of He's just another player playing in the name of love I've seen enough, now this must come to an end Get another boyfriend Shining Star I enjoy the music in particular in this song, and lyrics are fun to sing along with. This is one of my 14-year-old daughter's favorites. And baby you know I let every single part of me be yours ooh yeah Doesn't matter if the phone might ring Cause I won't hear a thing When I'm in your arms can't you know what to do to turn me on oh baby You're my shining star, that is what you are There is no one like you baby, baby no Angels everywhere Everytime you're near You will always be my baby Oh my my baby I Promise You (With Everything I Am) If you like romantic music, this song is sure to touch your heart. It's in the silences, the words you never say I see it in your eyes, it always starts the same way It seems like everyone we know, is breaking up Does anybody ever stay together, anymore? I promise you, from the bottom of my heart I will love you till death do us part I promise you as a lover and a friend I will love you like I never love again With everything I am The Answer to Our Life I find myself getting emotional when I listen to this song. The lyrics are well-done,and carry an impact. You see me sitting here, a smile upon my face The time has come but you know that it's not too late There's been too many things, together we have seen It's not too hard if we start to believe And we're not gonna take anymore Can we try to erase all the pain So please Show me a reason, give me a sign Tell me the way we, fall out of line Is it today or is it tonight? We'll find, the answer to our life Everyone I think this is probably my least favorite song on the CD, but it is still easy-listening and certainly not torture to hear it. It just doesn't affect me the way the other songs do. We've been inside the circus We take the pleasure with the pain I guess there's something about us Whatever comes around we'll always stay the same Oh yeah Let's get on with the show Turn the lights down low You were there from the start We know who you are We know, who you are! Everyone, everyone, everyone Said this one goes out to you Everyone, wish they had showed us what you done and this one goes out to you. More Than That I simply love this song. It is sweet, romantic, and reaches into my very soul every time I hear it. This is one of my favorite of the Backstreet Boys songs. I can see that you've been crying You can't hide it with a lie What's the use in you denying The words you have at home I heard him promise you forever But forevers come and go Baby he would say whatever It takes to keep you alive Tell the truth between the lines Oh I will love you more than that I won't say those words, then take them back Don't give lonliness a chance Baby listen to me when I say I will love you more than that Time Another slow, sweet song; not as impactful as some of them but still one that is quite a pleasure to listen to and helps promote a dreamy, mellow mood. Time, look where we are and what we've been through Time, sharing our dreams Time, goes on and on everyday, baby Time is what it is Come what may Not For Me Another song that tells a story; about love that is not the same on both sides. I think this imparts a good message to kids; you don't have to stay in a bad relationship just because. I was looking for something On the crime scene where you're in too deep I found a note with this number It's just another clue I got a little suspicious, I got a feeling That you ain't true to me I should have known better than to buy your lies You can fool anyone but I got eyes to see That you're not for me, babe Yes I will A song any teenage girl would love to hear dedicated to her on the radio. It is the epitomy of true love; of the way love should be; and how love should progress. I open my eyes I see your face I cannot hide I can't erase The way you make me feel inside You complete me girl, that's why Something about you makes me feel Baby my heart wants to reveal I'm down on my knees, I'm asking you So these three words I wanna hear from you Yes I will, take your hand and walk with you Yes I will, so these three words I promise to Yes I will, give you everything you need And someday start a family with you Yes I will, take your hand and walk with you Yes I will, baby I promise to Yes I will, give you everything you need And someday start a family with you It's True Another romantic song, this time saying one is sorry for doing the wrong thing and asking to be forgiven. Even the lover makes a mistake sometimes. Like any other, fall out and lose his mind. And I'm sorry. For the things that I did. For your teardrops over words I said. Can you forgive me, and open your heart once again. Oh yeah It's true. I mean it. From the bottom of my heart. Yeah it's true with out you I would fall apart. What Makes You Different (Makes You Beautiful) This is a truly beautiful song, and one that is a total pleasure to listen to. It opens with sweet, soothing guitar music. This song sends chills down my spine; the lyrics reach deep inside to my very spirit. I know sometimes you feel like you don't fit in And this world doesn't know What you have within When I look at you I see something rare A rose that can grow anywhere And there's no one I know that can compare What makes you different makes you beautiful What's there inside you shines through to me In your eyes I see all the love I'll ever need What makes you different Makes you beautiful to me How Did I Fall In Love With You This is a song about how a person can suddenly realize that they have totally fallen in love with someone, after that someone is gone. Remember when, we never needed each other The best of friends like Sister and Brother We understood, we'd never be, Alone Those days are gone, and I want so much The night is long and I need your touch Don't know what to say I never meant to feel this way Don't want to be Alone tonight What can I do, to make it right Falling so hard so fast this time What did I say, what did you do? How did I fall in love with you? What Do I Like About This CD? I am funny about music; I like to be able to understand the lyrics. I really hate it when I listen to a song and I can't figure out what the singer is singing! I like to listen to musical compositions that make me want to dance, or simply to reflect. I like a vocal and musical combination that stirs my spirit and touches my heart. I get all of these things when I listen to Backstreet Boys, and Black and Blue is a favorite CD simply because of these reasons. The music is sweet, wholesome, and clean. I am not afraid of what I will hear when my youngest daughter (age 9) puts in this CD because I know I won't be embarrassed, even if she has friends over. The boys in this group have incredible singing voices; melodic, sweet, and totally soothing to hear. No harsh sounds on this CD! I highly recommend Black and Blue by the Backstreet Boys. It is readily available at real-world music stores, chain stores such as Wal-Mart, and also online at stores such as Amazon.com. It costs approximately $15.00 for the CD.
