Album Notes Personnel: Junior Murvin (guitar); Winston Wright (piano); Ansel Collins (keyboard); Aston "Family Man" Barrett (bass); Carlton Barrett (drums). Recorded at Black Ark Studio, Kingston, Jamaica. A well-annotated and excellent-sounding release, BLACK ARK IN DUB delivers just what the title promises. Recorded in the '70s at Lee Perry's Kingston, Jamaica studio, the tracks on this lengthy CD extensively feature Perry's exemplary studio band, The Upsetters, built around the superlative sibling rhythm section of Carlton and Aston "Family Man" Barrett. In the late '60s and early '70s, as rock steady was slowly transforming into the slower, more menacing and atmospheric reggae, it was a common practice for producers to put "dub," or instrumental, tracks on the B-sides of singles. Perry was the first producer to focus on dub as its own art form, full of bizarre shifts in dynamics and tempo and often featuring strange sound effects. BLACK ARK IN DUB is an excellent introduction to one phase of the wildly varied career of this legendary Jamaican producer/performer.
